How do those of you with substantial real world responsibilities (shout outs to you guys still in school and/or with part time jobs, I'm jelly) manage to fulfill said responsibilities and not let your tech skills turn to rubble?

I pretty much set aside my Friday nights and Saturdays to Smash with my partner at his place, unless either of us has something more important (homework, driving lessons, personal activites, etc.) to do. Sessions are generally 1-3 hours long, depending on how we're feeling.

Play hard, work hard. When in college I went to a weekly smashfest (like 90% of them, never near finals), started and ran a smash bros club and got good grades all while working in the housing department for the school. I knew my responsibilities and prioritized my time as school > work > smash. I would make sure my work was done on time or ahead of time and then plan for having no work on thursday (job schedule to not work then and would do assignments early or throughout the day thursday if due friday). You know what time you have and if you can figure out the time assignments or work will take you can schedule around it.
I now work hours a week, all weekdays generally 9 to 5. Knowing that, I play with others on weekdays after 6 some days and go to lots of tournaments. Also since I am in a long distance relationship atm, I plan ahead of time when I will visit her or have her visit me, and won't make other plans or go to tounaments then. It's all about time management, knowing how long what you need to do will take, how much time you have to give and not getting too distracted with salty runbacks so if you know you can play for 5 hours then sleep before class or work then don't play for 8 and mess up the next day.

I used to have trouble with time management and getting things done, until I started to write things down. Things became much easier to remember and plan out ahead of time.

Play during that gap of time you have in school that you have nothing to do. (Well, I'm in college so Wednesdays for me)

Small smash scene...
Almost no Transportation...

So I keep my tech skill good by playing casually.

I play with my roommates in between homework.

That's ... it really. It's not hard.
You mean to tell me that you manage to find time for 5+ hour smashfests with friends inbetween homework?

or is it just not normal that I play smash for 5+ hours consistently.

To be honest. When I was in school I spent 60~ hours a week in the lab. Was at school 12 pm -> 3 AM every day M->sunday. So didn't play much during then lol.

But now that I'm working I have more time to play. Got 1.5 hrs for lunch. typically got an hour of spare time to do w/e and thats when I practice some tech skill. Then on weekends I play with my friends whenever my gf isnt craving league of legends.

Smash sessions last like... 6 hrs ._.

In most cases, even with school and a job combined there's still some time somewhere to get in some practice. I just found a whole group of students in my area that meet up all the time for nothing but fighting games. I brought PM to my first time there and it has become a staple in the games list already. Not that it was hard to compete with SF4, but yaknow.

Do you guys really devote all your free time to smash? I can't imagine living like that

And I think a lot of these time estimates you people are throwing out are highly exaggerated

honestly smash isnt as time consuming as marvel vs capcom. Thats wat I played as my main fighting game before I got on the smash train and like... to keep up my tech skill in smash takes only a bit of practice every week. but keeping it up in marvel took about 2-3 hours a day. some of the hours ppl saying are like 5-6 hrs one day a week. not too much imo

when comparing it to some others.

I don't play UMvC3 at home except online, and I do solid in tourneys for this game(apex pool results would be nice, I want to know all the people I bopped).

yeah man. i play umvc3 online too. it kind of sucks tho. its very unrealistic how safe hidden missles are online and hulk gamma charges ._. and landing lightning loops are zero is practically impossible so i gota settle for skittles dhc-> vergil championship belt lol.

but overall the online in marvel is enjoyable.

I play mostly offline(how I got to be where I am), I know the deal about online though.
As for Hulk? He kinda gets dropped by my team LOL

Who you play? I got a couple teams

Main: Zero, Vergil, Dante
Online team when i'm salty: Zero, doom, phoenix
Online team when I'm REALLY salty: Morri, Doom, Vergil

For the record i played zero dante in vanilla day 1 and vergil day 1 of umvc ._. (ok morri and doom was total teir whoring) but I would have played the sparda brothers and zero regardless.

Thor/Dormammu/Skrull in various orders(T/D/S most commonly in I need to counterpick), it covers every single scenario if I change order intelligently.
It also helps that I'm kinda stupid good with all 3 characters after 5 years of Smash/FGC common sense/experience/muscle memory LOL

I can only devote as much time as people will devote it to me.

If they want to play for an hour I'll play for an hour. If they want to play for 18 hours, I'll play for 18 hours.
Since most of the time we play for fun, and I mean the kind of 4 player free for all fun we can spend a LOT of time on smash.

Just don't ask me to Wi-Fi. My tolerance for that is low.

My computer can't.

When I do get a new comp you're probably going to be the first one to know when I get dolphin working.
I'm trying to spread the word about Dolphin Netplay, and in the process challenge every smashboards regular visitor i can. So when you get Dolphin hit me up
