I've noticed that a very common edgegaurding tactic specifically in fox and falco matchups but other characters as well at apparently top level play is to try and back air on the stage right at the edge

like say a fox is firefoxing off and above the stage, a fox or falco will stand at the edge and try to backair right at the edge but still on the level, as the fox sweetspots the ledge.

Ive also noticed this back air neeevvver works, but yet people do it at the highest level of play almost as a staple edgegaurd, like its generally accepted as the best thing to do.

I realize this is super safe and makes the player, sweet spot the ledge, so that you are gauranteed to be on the level and they are on the edge, which I guess is the best position to be in,

so is the purpose of this back air simply to force the player to the ledge and then try and use that advantage as they return to the level, or are people actually trying to edgegaurd with the bair.

everytime I see it I can't help but thinking shine turnaround edgehog , rising bair to force them to firefox high then punish the lag on there recovery,

is this not feasible??

somone please tell me why people do this?

also, too illustrate how common this is, to find an example of this took me like literally less a minute, I just went to waffles video, hmmm fox dittos jman and lucky, less then a minute in lucky tries to do this in what seems like an automatic edgegaurd if he simply shineturnaround edgehogged to bair.... or dashdance turn around waveland edgehog bair.

someone please tell me If Im just crazy.

In general, it's a lazy, but safe way to cover an option. Being safe means a lot, especially under certain conditions in tournament play.

It's not the best option though obviously, because you missed a read (and with it, a KO opportunity) every time you do this and they sweetspot. I made a post in the RoM3 vid thread about Kage doing this quite often vs spacies instead of reverse uair spiking them (when he reads a sweetspot firefox/bird to the edge). Ganon's SHFFL'd bair reaches pretty low but it's never going to hit a perfect sweetspot.

It depends on how confident you are in your prediction and your own tech skill at that moment, because like I said, you're missing out on a KO opportunity, but you'll feel like kicking your own *** in tourney if you go for an edgeguard and mess up and get shine spiked because of it (omg I should have just played it safe!). lol

a lot of players don't care about edge guarding if they have to stay on the stage and just throw the safe bair simply to cover the chance that they don't perfect sweetspot. After that they just hold the stage down and try to get into a better edgeguarding position the next time the opponent gets hit off.

Half the time they do a bair in the hopes that they'll go straight on to the stage, and it's a safe option. Doesn't leave you open, and it might hit them.

yeah i think theyd just rather force them to the ledge and possibly punish a mistake then try something thats not guaranteed
