Okay, I'm having trouble with L-cancelling falco. Yesterday I picked up the controller and tried it, and -right off the bat- I had the timing down perfectly. I was HAPPY because this was the first fast character I successfully shffled with. You know how it feels when you just "get it" automatically and you're like "Yeah, I can do this! SWEET!" But! After a while, my timing was thrown off, I couldn't get it back, and I'm pretty pooped out now:urg::mad::urg: I was using the A button for aerials, L trigger to cancel, and X to short hop. If there's an easier/better way to do it, please let me know. Any other pointers are welcome as well. Plus, my morale's pretty low now too, so a pat on the back would be nice.

for the record, I usually short hop, aerial and THEN fast fall because I can't seem to squeeze in the aerial if I fast fall first

------------------------
UPDATE

I've got L-cancel down but it comes in short bursts on and off. Progress truly is, refreshing.

My next sticking point would probably be calibrating my combos to different fall speeds, but I'll let experience take care of that

Wow that was a brain f*ck if anything, lol. I managed to L-cancel but my right thumb's used to waiting for my left index finger before it hits b- so my fingers feel like bricks.

Shffling is easily a difficult move when first learning it. When i first started playing, i never used to C-stick. However when i learned about shffling it was a necessity to pick up the C-stick in order to perform the move.
You should practice shffling with the C-stick...unless you want to go manual like some people. One of my friends has actually dropped the C-stick and learned shffling without it.

lol I've been practicing for 2 hours :(
lmao, the known majority of this board have been practicing for months, even years on end, and still goof up every once in awhile.
this should give u an idea of how much practice ur going to need to become somewhat perfect at shffling.

edit::

just keep at it tho, i myself play like maybe 10 hours a week of smash minimum. 1-2 hours a day minimum. when u play ur friends, practice pillaring their shields. thats a good start for practice

I've been practicing powershielding with my left trigger to get timing down. You think it'd help if I did that drillshine thing with fox in training mode? -Or should I just stick with falco?

Drillshining has absolutely nothing to do with power shielding.....

the powershielding thing was to get my left index finger used to timing, so that I can aim the l-cancel better on an aerial. you're welcome to post something constructive though.

The precision required for l-canceling is nowhere near the precision required for powershielding so I wouldn't recommend using powershielding to practice l-canceling.

You are never supposed to Fast fall first when SHFFLing. You need to aerial, THEN fastfall.

Use the cstick to seperate the motions down on the cstick, and down on the control stick. As opposed to using the control stick for both the dair and the fastfall. that might help.

u dont practice L-cancelling with other characters to get good at a certain character..

example : drillshining with fox has a TOTALLY different timing than pillaring with falco

You press L the same distance from the ground with everyone. It's the rate at which they fall, and the hitlag of the attacks which make the difference. For Fox's drillshine, you hit multiple times, making more hitlag and therefore a slower fall. You need to L-cancel later with that than you would with Falco's dair, which only has one hit and therefore less hitlag and faster falling.

Quax i really hope you arent expecting to become a pro in less than 6 months. Most of the people here have practiced for at least a year as Giggidax has said.

So if you arent getting shffling or any other of the advanced techniques down in less than a week, just keep practicing and you will soon get it.

lol, apparently being CURIOUS doesn't fly here. Either way, I've got L-cancel down but it comes in short bursts on and off. Progress truly is, refreshing.

I find using the c-stick to shffl hard. Also, I used Link to learn how to shffl and got it down pretty fast - the motion and such, but that's probably because Link used to be my main. I still had a long way to go before being proficient with it in battle. I spent part of my winter break slashing and kicking DK and Bowser all across Final Destination.

It may help to chunk it up one at a time. That's what I did to understand how it all worked out. Get good at sh, then ff, then shff. Then sh, aerial, ff. Then just get familiar with l-cancel. Then piece it all together. Keep practicing it in place. Then, when the time is right, start shffl'ing while you move. Nair was a difficult one for me to get used to - Moving while letting the Control stick go back to neutral was a hard concept for me at first.

I always find that practicing the individual parts of the shffl to be the easiest way to practice it as a whole. if you get your timing off, just practice it w/o fast falling. if you have trouble doing directional airs, just stick with nair until you get it. if you have trouble L-canceling, just mentally combine it with the Fast Fall. If you can do this, then all you need to do is make sure you can shorthop consistantly and you should have it. If you need more specific answers, feel free to PM me and I'll be sure to answer them as soon as possible.

Same problem I had yesterday(very odd because I never miss an L-cancel) it was my controller I didn't put it correctly when I was assembling my control, so I had to disassemble it again and I realized that some of the parts on the L button weren't matching well so I had to put them back properly and presto! my controller continued working as always

So think about it... maybe is your controller, If you've been playing for years(reglardless if you knew or not of advanced techs) it could be

Training mode wont help too much. A lot of new people have trouble SHFFL into an actual player or shield, but can do it on flat ground fine. I say just get a friend to play with, because by yourself, vs a computer, and vs a player are three totallyyyyy different things. But if you don't plan to play competitively or with friends, its fine doing just training mode on FD..

jem-waitasec, where did I say I never practice with friends...?(although I wish I had more that played smash) and SPEAKING of tournaments, this may be old news but it's such a bummer that ken's no longer doing biweeklies and that he retired from smash. Looks like I missed the pwnage train! :p It was only 25 minutes away :(

4aces and rx, great posts. It's common sense but that eludes me more than I'd like it to sometimes :) (me tired fingers wish I thought of this earlier)

raynex I'm glad you liked it. (I did it for the lulz.) I used charcoal and did the values with toilet paper.

In my opinion, using R to shffl gives your right hand too many things to do, especially if you're using c-stick too. Of course there are people who do that second naturedly. Just don't force yourself to change your style if it gets too annoying.

Your original method works fine, I think you just need to try doing it step by step. Like someone already mentioned, do each part of the shffl individually and then string them together.
