B sticking Mario is a nasty thing to behold.

Thats a good thing. Mario's cape can an unexpecting force on others, and really easy to use.
Just set C-stick to specials. While you jump forwards, hold the C-stick backwards. Mario should use the Cape and retreat backwards. This also works with the fireballs (you must tilt at an upwards left angle. North-west to be exact.)

Anyone else try it?

i have tried it but i prefer using c-stick as smash not special. I still think it's good i personally like using smash. with the c-stick set at smash, u can use Back air to hit them and retreat after that. i rather retreat off an attack then a cape or fire ball.
