Autopiloting

Hello all.
I have an issue with auto piloting. Today at my local weekly, my first match was up against a decent Roy. First match I ended up winning because I was playing patiently. Punished him for approaching and spot dodges however in the next 2 matches, he adapts and begins to play patiently. At this point I end up shifting from playing patiently to playing very aggressively, constantly getting punished for repetitive dash attacks and always running at him without a game plan.By the time I realized that I was auto piloting, the set was over. Whats funny to me is that I was able to notice that he was adapting in the last two matches but for some reason I didn't really change up my play style like I should have so i was pretty much playing mindlessly. So my question to you guys is have you all auto piloted at some point in your smash career and if you did, did you notice it in time to fix it? How would you fix this? Is there any way from preventing auto piloting? Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

-Thank You

there no real quick fix, easy answer, or shortcut to solve your problem
You just have to keep reminding yourself while you play to not autopilot and to think instead, always be asking questions in your head
Is he approaching?
how is he approaching?
is he running away?
if I run at him what does he do?
when he retreats from me, does he go back, up, or try to roll through me?
if I run and stop in front of him what does he do?
does he spotdodge or roll everytime he whiffs a move in front of me?
does he try to quickly throw out a fast move like a jab everytime he whiffs a move in front of me?

etc, etc

At first you'll get frustrated because you'll keep falling back into autopiloting, its not just a case of 'oh yeah I just have to keep reminding myself and problem solved', you'll keep ****ing up, but the more you struggle, the more you keep reminding yourself not to autopilot, the more you try to think about everything the easier it gets.

Also dont play when you are really tired
