Ah. I don't know how the others saw this, but for me the reason to do this was FUN. I thought it'd be fun to have something like this. If Aldwyn got second it wouldn't make Italy 2nd best country, that's right, but that isn't the point of this either. To compare this with the UEFA Champions League that inspired me: If Tampere United gets second in the CL, that doesn't mean Finland is the second best football country in Europe. No, this would be done "just for fun", to see what happens, and to possibly stir the competition in a slightly new way. And the winner would have a nice title to boast with.
Yes, I had in mind that every country would have some sort of qualification to determine their representative(s), be that just one qualification tourney or just a Power Rankings style ranking to find out who the best is/are. Like I said, this would probably work best as a bonus event at a big European tournament.
Heh, your idea of the 3-man crew thing reminds of something else: the Davis Cup (tennis for those who don't know). What about having countries play each other in matches of 5 sets, 4 of which are singles sets and 1 that is a teams set. You can have just two players on your team if you want, or you can have three or four if you prefer that. Norway for instance would possibly have Masamune and Tonberry as their singles players, and Masamune and Kriz playing in the doubles match. The order in the Davis Cup goes something like:
1st day: Country A player #1 vs. Country B player #2
Country A player #2 vs. Country B player #1
2nd day: Country A vs. Country B doubles match
3rd day: Country A player #1 vs. Country B player #1
Country A player #2 vs. Country B player #2
So that's 5 sets there.
I'm just randomly throwing out ideas here. Since competitive Smash really IS competitive, it's in my opinion a good idea to look at the way competition is organized in sports. It doesn't always work, but at least sometimes it does.
