Atmosphere

I've always been a recreational player, but a friend of mine who got me on the game is pushing me to become a competitive player. I was just curious as to what I should expect from a tourney as far as the atmosphere of the place goes. My friend has told me a bit about rules and things like that, but we never have gotten into the atmosphere of the place. Just wondering if you could shed some light on that.
