Assist trophies: temporary playable characters?

Assist trophies featured a lot of unplayable characters in Brawl, definitely not the same as full character status but still satisfying in its own way. But what if instead of only summoning scripted fighters, picking up some assist trophies could turn you into the character and let you play as the character for a limited amount of time?

Let's say you turn into Shadow the Hedgehog. You run around and fight as if he was a fully-fledged character, but he only has a few attacks, probably Chaos Control moves; your moves would be much stronger than normal attacks but you could still be hit like a normal fighter. After 30 seconds or after dying, you turn back into your fighter.

I think it would be a great way to make assist trophies feel like more like guest characters, even if only a few are playable.

I really like this idea, but I doubt Sakurai thought of it. My question to you, is what would happen to the character you were playing as before?

Not entirely bad, really. I'd fit the chaoticness that is Smash (because what if you get an Assist that does nothing too helpful) and gives more room for other "playable" characters in this Nintendo-fest.

I think the character you'd play before would go to a temporary reserve until the time period/death of your Assist and then you'd turn back to normal.

I'd like to think that the thought has crossed his mind. What really matters is if it's worth the development time, and if it works well on both consoles.

Your fighter transforms into the character, so it's as if your fighter became the assist character. So you would disappear while the new character is out and vice versa.

I actually like the idea. It would be a pretty nifty way to push the series forward and be innovative. I am not sure if I would really want it implemented though.

This is exactly what I THOUGHT Assist Trophies were going to be when I first heard about them ages ago.

I was thoroughly disappointed with the actual result being no different from a Pokemon.

I'd be more than happy with something like this.

Oh boy, I'd simply love being Mr. Resetti and striking opponents with speech bubbles and make it so they couldn't perform a certain move again, therefore "resetting" their controls. Oh, and Nintendog. JUST Nintendog.

It's be interesting but I can pretty much guarantee that it would raise 400,000 different kinds of butthurt if it actually happened. It's a nice compromise but, that's the thing, most gamers don't like compromise and there would be whining of almost unimaginable magnitude over why certain characters weren't fully playable.

The same could be said for normal assist trophies or trophies or stickers or bosses, couldn't it? They're not playable but it's the same kind of "compromise" where they are included but not playable.

And people still pitched a fit about them. In my opinion, having assist trophies be partially playable would be poking the bear too much. Heck, people are still butthurt about Issac and Ridley after almost 6 years.

Love this idea. I won't be using items anyways (other than smash balls), so it wouldn't affect me anyways.

That is an awesome idea. This should also work with Poke Balls too

Focusing on those who would be offended rather than those who would be glad to play or see their character is backwards logic. That kind of all-or-nothing stance would be detrimental to Smash representing characters in any shape or form. Fans also dislike seeing their favorite characters in stages or as bosses, but it's better than not being there at all.

But like I said, most people aren't for that kind of compromise. I personally would be okay with it but being around the Smash fanbase as long as I have I know it would not be something that would be received well, just as many Assist Trophy became more of a source of griping than actual appreciation.
