so tonight i decided to work on some much needed practice i had to get in for my artwork. im practicing because i need to get myself unrusted enough in order to make an impression on people with my artstyle.

ironically, i have a unique style in that i can draw cartoony or realistic, firm or cutesy, all sorts of things. i just dont know where to begin. it literally is an art to choose the medium, style, and direction i want to go with my art.

i draw anthropomorphic, human, and animal. i love to draw fantasy and environments, even though i'm pretty bad at backgrounds for my subjects. i continue to struggle with hands and poses. however, my expressions seem good enough. i aspire to become a full-fledged animator, designer, and story-writer. i just don't know how it will happen. reason being? i am in computer science for a major at purdue, and it drains a lot of my time and effort.

i have no idea how i will like the field when (and if) i have a job in it, but cs is definitely an interesting study. i just hope that all this programming knowledge isn't going to weigh me down from actually creating competitive solutions to every day problems. maybe, just maybe, i can make my own video game with my background one day. but that requires creativity, experience, and education. two of those i haven't fulfilled yet. you can guess which ones.

i just hope someday my questions will be answered. when they are, i can only hope to continue to ask questions. strange want, huh?

typed this blog up at a quarter after 4 in the morning before my dad wakes up to go to work. gotta love those late nights. just spent an hour and a half nearly drawing up a new concept art of my character, Spectrum. who knows, i might actually make this one colored/detailed and uploaded for once? (sigh).

Just keep chipping away man. The advantage of majoring in computer science is that you'll actually be able to get a job once you graduate, and you can continue to work on your art without worrying about how you're going to eat.

I think having a comp sci major will actually be helpful. Given that I don't know all the nitty gritty details about animation, I do know that they use comps and programs to animate; it allows them to reuse generic characters or reuse backgrounds and stuff. I love to draw too, but I'm not going anywhere :p Post some stuff online? I love looking at other people's artwork, especially if it's on paper and not electronic. I can't tell you how much "stolen art" or "re-colors" of someone else's art I've seen online - part of a reason why I don't browse deviant art. Anyway, good luck too you man.

I didn't know you wanted to be an animator! That's what I'm studying atm, and I'm having a blast with it.

Im still working out the kinks in the anatomy on one of my character sheets. I'll have it uploaded shortly when I have a clean pencil and inked version. I want to make this one my avatar.

Shameless bump to top of page. This is what I'm basically working on right now. This is the main character I've had since I was 13 years old (I'm 21 in a few days for reference)

I have a huge story and whatnot for this and many other characters I've created (not all anthropomorphics, keep in mind)... In fact, my main character (this one) is actually human in his past life. Yep. Reincarnation, not transformation.

Anyways, enough jabber. Images.

Traditional Pencil Sketch (will be scrapped when I decide to fine-detail it for my gallery)

Color Work In Progress... Using new color/painting method in photoshop. Need to get better. This is just the first elements being blocked-in.

If you guys think it's warranted, I can make an art thread in one of the other areas of this board just to update in general. Otherwise, just keep a look out for my art pages that you've no doubt found.

Links just in case:

http://krystedez.deviantart.com/ <- Old stuff right now.
http://www.furaffinity.net/user/krystedez <- Most recent stuff besides what you see in this topic right now X_X

I'm about to die from lack of sleep. So yeah. Critique is welcome and what not, I appreciate the interest. And if this sort of art isn't your cup of tea, it's cool with me.

These are good, you should definitely make a thread in the Artwork Emporium so you can just update the OP with stuff as you make more work (and we can offer some crit if you want). You mentioned in the OP that you have trouble with hands and poses, if that's true then my only suggestion is to work from real life/photographic examples of those to get them to look 'right'. Anatomy is one of the hardest subjects to represent in the artistic practice, especially without a reference to work from.

But yeah, I would say if you plan on entering the game industry, this sort of thing will give you an advantage--having a skill set in both art and programming. I'm pretty sure there are positions that require knowledge of both so this will look good in your portfolio/resume. And being able to design a variety of styles is just as important. Kiu man, hope you'll post more.

Similarly I'm also looking into story-writing (dad was a sci-fi writer. it runs in the blood) for animation-specific things, like an action/mystery I had planned to do this summer but pretty much shelved. Perhaps we can collaborate sometime XD
