Are 3DS tournaments like a thing?

I doubt it, not the big tournaments anyway. You might find some 3ds tournament on smashladders.com

Depends on your local scene, as most players would opt to play on the wii u for tournaments. You can try your luck online, as 3ds tournaments are more likely to be common than offline.

In the beginning of the life span there was a ton of tournaments. if you look them up on youtube you can see them! but now they're probably more local tournaments or online.

3DS tourneys are more common online though.

There are. There's more tournaments online like others said. Then again, with a portable version of the game, you can practice in places other than where your Wii U is, since it is portable of course (Well, if you can make similarities between a Gamecube Controller and a 3DS). So, you can practice on the go!
