Most likely yes. If it was on the Wii, then the console probably recognized it as either a Wii Remote, a Classic Controller (most likely one) or a Gamecube Controller, all of which are supported in Smash 4.

As a general guideline, you can 100% safely assume that if a controller works with Brawl, it works with the Wii U Smash.
