Two years ago, whilst vacationing in North Conway, I stopped at a toy store. Upon the counter is something I know I must buy: some frog, pet... thing. Grow-A-Frogs. I shell out $20, bring the tank home, fill out the form for my live tadpole, and wait a few weeks. A month later, bam. I got a tadpole in my mailbox. I name her... Pantagruel.

Now, I have (what I'm pretty sure is a) fully grown Grow-A-Frog. Its a nice aquatic pet (not affectionate, but its lived longer than any other aquatic pet I've owned [goldfish]), but I'm having trouble keeping her aquarium clean.

I change her water once or twice a month, but recently this bizarre, brown, moldy stuff growing on the side of the tank. I clean it off, but it grows back within a few days in the same spot. I'm reluctant to use soap to clean it, because Grow-A-Frogs are supposedly frajile as premature infants and can not have any alien chemical substince in their water.

Any aquatic pet owners out there with any advice?

Is the tank exposed to direct sunlight? It could be brown algae. And if so, try limiting light exposure. There are also chemicals they sell for fish tanks that can get rid of it too, but you'll have to check to see if it's compatible with frogs.

And, yeah, don't ever use soap or any other detergent in an aquarium. Just scrub and rinse with plain water.

Actually, it is. Thanks! This will probably help.

I know this question won't help you, but what does Pantagruel mean?
Pantagruel was the name of a character in Francois Rabuleigh's (I spelled that name wrong) novel Pantagruel and Gargantua. (Or something along like that.) I did a report on the writer 2 years ago, and I loved the name.

I call my frog Pants for short.
