I'm totally fine with them reusing music for the stages. I understand that. But reusing songs for other modes? Some stages only have old music? (Flat Zone for example) Reusing VICTORY SONGS
The victory songs are what really got me mad. Why? Brawl had great music don't get me wrong... But I really wanted some new victory songs. I even thought that because Bowser got his own that maybe every character got one like Brawl was maybe going to (as evident by some left over code. Tell me if I'm wrong on that.) Why go cheap here?

I'm probably just salty because Brawl Mother franchise victory theme wasn't good compared to Melee's.

I'm withholding judgment till the game comes out.

Same with the Wii U version, just give it time.

Although i have to say that the Magicant music and the latest music on the site (Pacman and Kappn's song) are the best songs on there.

I'd have sworn I heard at least a few unique victory songs (at the very least, Bowser Jr's sounded new to me).

As for the rest of the music, I'm just happy Fire Emblem (Melee) can play on Ferox. Besides, the U version's music will be much more diverse, so I wouldn't worry about it.

I always preferred pretty much all of the Melee victory themes to the Brawl ones, so any reused ones are a bit of a bummer, I guess. The rest of the music's a mixed bag as always, I'm sure; I'll have to wait to judge it.

The only thing I'm disappointed by is the main theme playing over the credits rather than a character specific one - even their stage song would be fine!

I'm not upset, just waiting to see what else these games have to offer! Loving the rearrangements of the spirit tracks overworld theme!

I'm more bothered about reused voice acting and sound effects than reused music (although I would have preferred to have had new victory themes as well). I'm pretty sure all most returning vets use a lot of Brawl VA, which just annoys me a bit. Why not rerecord to make it feel a little more fresh? Anybody's guess.

It's a really minor gripe, though, and I feel confident the Wii U version's soundtrack is going to be absolutely excellent, VA notwithstanding.

Reusing BGM isn't that unheard of, since that has happened with the New Super Mario Bros. sequels.
Well, New Super Mario Bros. has the reputation of being a rehash series. lol

They would reuse the songs but remake them so they sounded better. At least from DS to Wii. I am unsure of Wii to Wii U. Wii U I thought had new music?
Anyway they took the songs DIRECTLY from Brawl. No changes. That's the part that upsets me.

One of my favorite Zelda songs so I totally agree. The new music is amazing. I just wish we got new music for victories aside from those select few characters.

I believe Bowser (And therefore Bowser Jr.) got a new song. But all other veterans use their Brawl songs. Don't quote me on that.
Anyway it just makes me mad. I'm probably just salty because the Brawl Mother victory song isn't that great compared to Melee and even 64. I love 64's. ALL the Brawl victory songs I felt were very lackluster.

I liked Brawl's victory tunes a lot, but I definitely agree on the Mother song. For whatever reason, I preferred the end of the Sound Stone medley over that sorta remixed slice of Polyanna.

This was just the thread that I was looking for to vent my frustrations....

Out of all the content that the 3DS version has in terms of reused content, I think the entire sound department (both songs and voice overs) was the biggest offender. Don't get me wrong, all of the new remixes are some of the best in the series (i.e. Rainbow Road, Gerudo Valley, Smiles and Tears, the list goes on), but when I hear all of the rehashes that make up about 50% of the music in this game, it's personally very hard to ignore. I honestly look forward to each new Smash game for all of the new music pieces; if I wanted to play with the songs from the previous Smash games, I would rather go back and just play those games. Especially since every stage in this game only gets two songs, when a straight game rip or prior remix takes the place for a potential new remix, I can't help but feel like the sound team cut way too many corners this time around and decided to rest on their laurels instead.

The only thing that got me more upset than the stage music was that the Brawl victory themes returned (most of which I didn't care for, especially Captain Falcon's), but then exceptions got made for characters like Bowser, Rosalina, Meta Knight and Dark Pit. If the intention was to differentiate those characters with more fitting themes, why couldn't the same have been done for every single character? Almost every character on the roster has some kind of notable theme/jingle associated with them, so I can't think of any reason why such a task couldn't be feasible.

In a similar vain, the strange choices in which characters got new and reused voice overs is not as infuriating as my previous two complaints, but still another prime example of how the sound department got lazy. Like I've said before, the new voices for characters like Pit and Sonic are great, but also make the fact that the rest of the Brawl VOs got copy/paste jobs. The fact that Bowser, Donkey Kong, and Diddy Kong still don't have their official voice actors for two games in a row still makes no sense to me. Even though the characters weren't changed enough to warrant full sets of new clips, a few of them here and there for each character would have been nice, especially since I'll have to hear them for at least the next five years.

(takes a deep breath)

...Okay, long text rant over (for now at least...)

tl;dr: Smash 3DS sounds and music: What's new is great, but there's way too much of the old that the new often gets overshadowed.

I'm actually really pleased with the 3DS soundtrack so far, only the lack of Metroid songs bothers me a lot.

I would be upset, except I have a near perfect remix of Spark Man's Theme so I can't complain!

I dunno. I guess I feel like, since Brawl went so all-out with creating so many songs, it'd be a bigger waste to have them unused. I don't think they need to create as many pieces as Brawl did as long as they introduce new music from games released since Brawl's time.

I'm not particularly mad about the soundtrack overall because Brawl had good stuff, this game has good stuff as well. No, the poor choice of Green Hill music is what bothers me, but it's not enough for me to despise the whole thing.

I'll be honest, I'm not following the complaint here much. You're complaining that past stages are using old music? And you're complaining that characters don't have new victory tunes? New and unique victory tunes were not a thing until Brawl, and even then it was mostly just Meta Knight. Aside from that people have basically always had their usual victory songs and past stages have always had old music.

That's way too expected to be disappointing on any real level.

My problem with them is most of them don't sound like victory songs. They don't have any umph. Like listen to the Zelda one. To me it's just a song? Same with the Pikmin one... Maybe it's just their instrument choice? Listen to the Star Fox fanfare between Melee and Brawl. One just sounds more victorious than the other.
Side note the Mother victory song in Brawl is supposed to be taken from the opening of Mother 1? I was always told that but I honestly can't hear it. Like the the second part of the original Eight Melodies.

Nonono. I am totally fine with them reusing songs on past stages. I even say that? "I'm totally fine with them reusing music for the stages." Like they reused tracks from old Smash games and also gave us some new tracks. Just like Brawl and even Melee did. I am fine with that. It's all good music.
I think you totally misunderstood almost every word I typed because I did not write anything like this. Every game we have gotten new arrangements of the victory songs. They obviously didn't use the same tracks from 64 in Melee. Same for Brawl. But then for Smash 4 they just took the songs they used in Brawl and reused them. The part about unique songs for every character was just a hope I had and not an expectation. I was not expecting that.
All I wanted was new arrangements for the victory songs. I expected that. Just like Melee and Brawl did. I'm just sad I have to listen to the same (imo) crappy music every time I win a fight. I just find it weird that they cut that corner. Music has always been a huge HUGE part of Smash. Why do that? I hope Sm4sh on Wii U fixes this.

Again. I'm probably just salty because I really disliked the Brawl victory themes. Especially Mother's.
It was never going to be the same scale as the wii u with limited space on the cart.
There's still a GB left on the cart. Also if they wanted to they could have gone with a 4 GB cart like Snake Eater 3D did. There was no way this was a space limitation. ESPECIALLY when all I wanted was new victory songs to replace the old ones. Those wouldn't take up any more space than the one's they used did.

Starting at 30s, imagine that sped up greatly and arranged, and that is what Brawl's Mother victory theme is. Likewise, in 64 and Melee it was the last four Sanctuaries' part of the Sound Stone Melody. Listen from Magnet Hill to the end.

And while I guess they could have used recognizable in-game victory tunes, they'd take some hard rearranging to make into something of roughly equal length. For instance, the signature tune at the end of every Megaman level is far shorter than the Starfox victory tune. Earthbound's is even shorter. While I agree, they could have perhaps used the looping versions of some songs when available instead of shifting into the neutral music, even then some series' are hard-pressed to find something good to use for that.

I just think is sounds close to the eight melodies. I dunno. Ithink it could have been so done so much better. Even with that same song. It needs to be far better arranged. It is a good song. I am just sad there's so much wasted potential. They should have fixed it. Fix all the bad music. (aka probably half the Brawl victory songs)

While I would've liked some newer songs, I'm fine with it for 3DS. Heck, we even have some new songs that are only in the sound test. The Wii U will be a smorgasbord of amazing Nintendo music, plus Nintendo is giving out the soundtrack via Club Nintendo. I ain't mad.

I'd actually be more disappointed if they didn't bring back some of the old music. Brawl was arguably the best video game soundtrack of all time.

reusing the brawl “challenger approaching!” jingle was a lazy decision and i was disappointed about that but otherwise i don't care since i enjoyed the brawl music greatly for the most part.

It's like, what, a four second sound that's only played 11-12 times in each game?

I don't think anyone got that I was not even talking about stage music. I only meant the victory tunes, special sound effects (like challenger approaching) and such. I LOVE the Brawl soundtrack. But most the little jingles and stuff that play just don't sound good.

It's like, what, a four second sound that's only played 11-12 times in each game?
Just because it rarely plays doesn't mean there shouldn't have been effort put into it. It feels like they cut corners and makes the game feel less special because of it.

Looking through and listening I can understand why some are complaining. However, I will say I was extremely pleased to see brand new remixes of the Dark World theme and Gerudo Valley.

When I first saw them I thought Dark World would be Brawl's mediocre (IMO) remix, and the very same Gerudo Valley track imported straight from OOT again, but I was very glad to be wrong.

If this was it, I might feel some disappointment, but we know that the Wii U version is right around the corner, and we know for a fact that it will have a ton more music.

not to be rude but does that like… make my point any less relevant lol? obviously it's not a big deal and not something that i'll even think about that often, but yeah, i'm concurring with little nemo here. i think there should have been some more effort put into it, especially since it's just a four-second sound, but whatever—i was just saying that it would have been nice to have a different sound.

to return to the topic, i really like the theme for the new mother stage. i haven't heard much of the new music, but that's the one song that's stuck with me.

Now that the victory themes have clean rips to listen to, I seriously don't understand why the sound team cut corners with the victory themes. Why wouldn't they want all of them to sound just as awesome as this:

I'm starting to want DLC for victory themes more than characters now :p

Music as a whole? Absolutely not:

I hear you on the victory themes though. Give it time--I'm sure the WiiU version will have new ones, and make up the difference for new songs.

I dont know whats to complain about honestly. If they port music from Melee and Brawl you should still be happy. Every smash has had an amazing OST.

Im just glad I get to listen to Brinstar Depths on a flat stage with no hazards this time around.

Also the find mii songs are surprisingly badarss.

I'm not exactly upset, but the laziness just STINGS. So much re-used Brawl/Melee content, especially on the sound department....

Sound department TOO lazy. Almost every sound is from Brawl. Victory songs are the biggest insult. Love the Magicant though.

Yes, considering half of the songs are recycled from Brawl. I'm surprised that there hasn't been more outrage.

The reused sounds and Victory Themes are the most disappointing in my opinion. Even Mario, Nintnendo's mascot, reused the same theme from Brawl.

I'm fine with the re-used tracks because they are great. I just think that this game could use some tracks from not-Uprising Kid Icarus.
Oh, and Mona Pizza. That song is so good that I'd start a fight for more.

I love the music and I figured that there would be a ton of reused music in at least the 3DS version from the start. But I noticed something, almost if not all of the characters have their own separate .idsp audio file for their victory music, but a lot of them are just duplicates. For example, there are files for Mario, Luigi, and Peach. Each specifically named after the character... and each are just the same exact jingle. Brawl didn't duplicate jingles, it just reused the same exact file. Why have multiple files for the same sound this time?
