Anti-Ganon Stuff

So a player in my group that is also a Marth main, and whom I feel is overall better than me, seems to struggle with the Ganon matchup. He recently lost to a Ganon main that I had absolutely no problems with (3 stocked in the two matches we played, granted they were friendlies) and I intend to teach him how to go about winning this matchup.

The problem is, I used to have a huge problem with Ganon until the last year or so (basically when I switched to the Mow + Dr Peepee playstyle), and now I just sorta crush all of the Ganon's I play (there aren't many ganon's in the north of Sweden, so I'm not claiming to be particularly amazing at this matchup at all). I'm not entirely sure what I'm doing that has led to this, although I have some good ideas as to why. In any case, it would be easier to teach this player how to handle Ganon if other people could help me identify what are good anti-Ganon strategies, tips, etc.

So far my plan in regards to teaching this player what to do are as follows:

1: Really work on your dash dancing and spacing. Identify the most comfortable space to be at that is as close as possible to Marth's optimal range.

2: Do not jump unless it is a followup to a hit or some kind of counter against the Ganon's aerial attack.

3: Don't use dash attack. (This guy likes the dash attack, or at least he did very recently.)

4: Use only safe pokes in neutral and approach more with movement than with any sort of attack.

Aside from this, I got nothing. If you guys have any more tips, it would be greatly appreciated!

I like to wait for him to make the first move and just fair his approaches. I also don't really try to combo ever, just juggle and edge-guard. I think people have an issue with just doing simple edge-guards. If a forward smash will work, then just forward smash. No need to go crazy and do something that will only work sometimes like dair. I think dtilt and fair interrupts are amazing in this matchup. I also try to play really reactive instead of prediction based because Ganon has some tricks if they're good, and his movement is deceptively quick.

Those four tips are much more for Marth in general rather than specifically against Ganon. For Ganon tips, since I don't know too much myself, I went to the Ganon boards to find what they do generally against Marth, try it (looking at something from the opposite perspectives helps out a lot). What I know is to be wary in neutral for random down B's and side B's and get him offstage for an easy edgeguard.

Check this out too.

To my defense, I had worked 8 hours and gotten out from a 3 hour car drive when we played. ;)
Grabbing works pretty well if your spacing is good, and also dtilt edgeguards are a pain to deal with.

Damn smashboards ate my first post on this, so here is the second go at it.

Hey now, these aren't the Ganon boards! Totally not fair that you stumbled on this mang. You should just move along and just pretend that this never happened *waves hands around like an idiot to bad old-school sci-fi sound effects*.

Well the cat's definitely out of the bag now, but in any case I was glad that you guys came to our tournament last week. It was also good to finally play you, although I had forgotten that you had just gotten in from a long'ish drive when we played. I very much understand how that affects your play (I became the impromptu TO for tvspelsjam 4 after the melee tournament was already an hour late, and I played TERRIBLY that day). BUT! Sometime in the near future we can play again in earnest. It'd be great if we could get the UGD guys to set up a special "smash fest" type event where we can just play for a long time. We could even have a small exhibition grudge match between the two of us if you want, that'd be a lot of fun.

I've learned the hard way that you have to keep your shield fresh. Ganon's fair and dair have this irritating knack for poking shields, and the fair can be easily spaced outside shield-grab range.

This

However, something I've found to be usually pretty strong against both Ganon and Falcon is aggressive fair camping, not in the sense that you just back out and wait for an approach, but intrude on their space a little and take it away with fairs. From what I understand, they don't really have the best of options against it. That isn't to say run up->fair just works all the time, but if you throw it out every now and again, its a good mixup for your approaches.
