Another look at Pivoting/dash dancing

Here’s the link to phanna’s thread on pivoting/dash dancing (vid included)

I know EL already made a thread about how useful pivoting/dash dancing could be to Marth.

But he just wanted to use it to get tipper smashes. I think it would be better if we used

pivoting for spacing tilts, especially d-tilts. I think having a spacing tool for one of marth’s

safest moves would really help him. Dash-dancing would be used in kind of the same way as

it was in melee ( you make your opp. whiff an attack, then you run back in and punish with a

grab, DB, etc . Marth’s fox-trot is good for this because it’s fast and you have good control

over its distance. If you’ve messed up your spacing while walling or you need to quickly

reset your spacing for ledge traps, etc, then you just fox-trot back, pivot and go from there.

Against Snake, if your d-tilt clanks with his f-tilt (which probably happens often), you

shouldn’t try to d-tilt again because snake’s f-tilt comes out faster. Instead, you could fox-

trot back, pivot, and continue poking with d-tilts or do whatever the situation calls for. You

could pivot your other tilts to space your self and stop SH approaches. If you’ve done some

conditioning with pivoted d-tilts, you could mix it up with pivoted SB, or you could also fox-

trot away, pivot, then fox- trot back in with DB or a grab. Find what works and what doesn’t,

be creative. So… I guess that’s it. I wanted to see if anyone else thought it would be useful

because I think it’s a great spacing tool and I really want to see other Marths use this.

What do you think?

Pros: Helps spacing and mindgames, allows you to do many actions.

Cons: leaves room for tripping and error, and consumes time if used actively.

IMO, I prefer to just walk where I need to go. Walking is ftw.

I do use this as a dodge/fakeout tactic from time to time. It feels good when I juke to the left so your fsmash misses, and then hit you with a reverse Dancing Blade.

I understand that dash-dancing isn't to be used the whole match, but I really wanted to focus on the

pivoted d-tilts. I've watched plenty of marth matches in the sticky thread, and I've often seen the marth

get punished after throwing out a move because he was to close to the opp. on the stage/ledge. I know

walking is important to marth, but fox-trotting then pivoting seems like a faster way to space yourself/

press your advantage during a ledge-trap.

I want to implement pivoting but I just fail at it. So when you pivot: how do you practice? And is there a way to do it without flicking the control stick like phanna said?

Also when you are flicking back the control stick to do the pivot are you trying to get the control stick back to neutral position or just a little bit past the neutral position?

There are other pivot techs like pivot sliding (click link above) but I don't know if they'd be as useful as

the "true" pivot. Check the true ATs section in vyse's AT guide and look for anything pivot related.

Unfortunately, I don't know of any other ways to do this other than the way phanna described it. When

practicing, break it up into practicing pivoting and then fox-trotting. Then try putting them together. To

make full use of dashdancing/ pivoting, you want to be able to easily switch between long and short fox-

trots. And I think you have to move the control stick past neutral, but in a way that it snaps right back to

neutral. If you have success with this I would love it if you posted vids. I want to see what good marth's

can do with this.
