It was bound to happen....but it happened before I could do anything. My laptop just died. I can turn it on but it automatically turns off. As well, if it gets to the screen - the screen is all frozen with white, blue, red, and yellow marks allll over the place.

I have had this laptop for 3 years and I use it 10+ daily so it's bound to happen. Today, the fan kept on shorting out and kep on shutting off on me. Finally, it shut off and will not turn back on.

I guess I am now looking for an inexpensive computer. Any ideas?

Well, if you posted this, you must be handling it pretty well...
I am on the home desktop.

Nah, I pretty much freakin out. I believe I still have a warranty on my laptop though but who knows. It's pretty beat up and out of shape.

::sigh:: There goes more money. Plus I am required to have a computer for student use.

EDIT: I don't mind shelling out 500-700 bucks for a new one but I am REALLY open to a cheap one with lesser option. The one I had costed around $1800 and was amazingly fast and sweet....until it started burning out/

I suggestNewegg. Good prices, incredible shipping and service. It's nice to read the user reviews they have.

For getting on the Internet and typing up paper (i.e. no gaming) expect to pay $500-1000. There aren't really any good 12"+ computers under $500, although they're getting there.

If you need to game on your laptop, expect to pay $1400-2500.

EDIT: Although ibuypower does indeed have a couple sub-$1100 gaming machines. I can't vouch for their quality or customer service, though.

Ha.
You should se MY laptop. It doesn't even have one of the opening hinges, and a special little cable happens to be sticking out all the time.
And if that cable is cut?
My computer is gone forever.

Well, my laptop had the misfortune of the screen messing up and going all "negative" (you know what I mean, right? I can't think of any better way to say it.) the day the warranty ended, and the first moment I actually needed it for college.

Yeah. There you have it, technology hates me. That **** laptop is where all of graduation money went, and I had originally planned on buying a saxophone with that money, but was convinced to get the laptop. Now I pretty much have neither. -_-

Unfortunately I can't help anybody with their problems here, but since we're on the topic of broken laptops...

One of the hinges on my laptop cracked and broke. Basically, I'm afraid to close the "lid" (monitor) because last time I did while trying to push the hinge back into place, there was a loud crack, a tiny spark, and two screws that fell out. So now I'm just leaving it up, duct taped to prevent anything else from falling out. Fortunately, the screen itself still works 100%, haven't lost functionality.

But I really need to get this fixed; being at university in the middle of nowhere doesn't help. Would most computer repair shops be able to fix this kind of thing for relatively cheap?

Just get somthing good and expensive. Shouldn't this be in computer cafe?
I would like to (and that's what my talptop was orginally) but due to to my money restrictions, being in college, and lowered work hours - I may have to opt for a cheaper computer since I will be paying the entire thing for myself.

I bought my first pc from ibuypower so I can vouch that their quality is good. That pc just recently died on me about a month ago and I've had that pc for about 6 years now.

You can get 4 gigs for $150.

I'd go to Newegg. I'd go to Newegg for most computer stuff. Just find memory with the price and specs you need, and pick the one with the highest ratings.

You can go as low as $25 for a gig of RAM these days.

Crucial makes good memory: 2 x 1Gb for $95 (nice and fast, too).

Single 2Gb sticks cost from $70-140, if you only have one slot.

But really, at least in my experience, most RAM is "good ram". I usually buy the cheapest I can find, and it's always worked out for me so far (RAM has only failed on me once).

Anyway, Newegg probably has what you need. Their regular shipping arrives in like 2-3 days, too, which is really impressive.

Hope this helps.

I got 2gb OCZ for 129 - 20MIR so 109. The timings are pretty great at 2-3-2-5. 4 gig is useless right now since Windows won't recognize it. Also, all ram is not the same. Some have heat spreaders and such to avoid melting and some are just better.
