An arguement about Roy that I wouldn't have made if I didn't think it was worth it/

I was just going to post this in a thread, but I think I ended up making a good point and wanted to share it with you all. This is why I think Roy will or won't return.

1. Roy, even if it is not as big as Marth, has a fairly large fanbase compared to other lords (espicially in North America), which ORIGINATES from his appearance in Melee. I played Roy forever and I became a huge Fire Emblem fan because I loved him.

2. Roy can be de-cloned, though I find it unlikely Sakurai would heavily rework him (although some characters HAVE recieved heavy reworkings between games, and even Mario himself has proven not to be invulnerable to tweaking), the fact remains that he CAN be de-cloned.

3. Fire Emblem has had... 11 games and an anime. That's not a small number. Even with Marth and Roy returning (provided at least Roy is tweaked), I don't think 3 characters (all of whom at very least APPEAR in two games, however minorly), two of which are already loved by many Smashers, is an unfair number to a series of that length.

4. While I'll admit Roy has low chances, Dr. Mario and Pichu FAR outweigh him on the list of people who are pretty screwed. I also believe (personally) that Ness is worse off than him. Why has Sakurai pointed out Lucas' similarities to Ness but made no comparison of Ike to Roy (or even Marth, who still shares good amounts of similarities with Ike)?

5. Roy, while arguably at a high-metagame is inferior to Marth, is still a powerful character who is well liked both for who he is (unlike Fox or Sheik) and for his ability as a Smash Character (unlike Bowser or Mewtwo). Depending on the number of Characters in Brawl, there are likely very good merits to keep Roy in.

6. Roy has red hair. This is a VERY SMALL and nearly insignificant fact, but considering the tradition of FE lords to be blue-haired, I feel this gives him some diversity that would help, and this also goes for his pacifistic personality. He is a VERY different type of person than Marth or Ike, and that does say something.
Now, against our fine red-headed friend:

1. Love him, hate him, or never gone near him, you can't deny facts, and the fact is Roy was put in Melee to promote the then-upcoming Fire Emblem 6. Regardless of whether he replaced Sigurd or not, he was not added because they felt he was needed or because he's a Nintendo staple; he was added as a walking, fighting billboard.

2. To counter my own point, Roy, while he can be modified, is a clone. Though he and Marth premiered in the same Smash game, he was added later, and it is widely believed that Sakurai dislikes clones, and well known that the Smash community dislikes them. If Sakurai knows this, he may be motivated to remove Roy rather than tweak a character with questionable reasoning to return.

3. Roy is most definitly less iconic than Ike or Marth. Marth has two games and the aforementioned anime, as well as the love of Smash fans for being a "high-tier character". Sakurai definitly knows this, as Marth is the primary character of the man recognized as likely the best Smash player in the world. Ike is the star of the first 3D Fire Emblem, as well as playing a large part in the first Wii one, and also has (unlike Roy and Marth) appeared in North American Fire Emblem games.

4. Marth is, as previously stated, the source of Roy's moves. Marth is rather popular and I, along with a fair number of people, believe he will return. With both he and Ike in the fray, Roy would seem rather unoriginal with both his moves (Marth) and his style (Ike) shared with other characters. Now again, this can be solved with tweaking. But not necessarily completly, and while he plays a lot different than Marth, the very existance of Ike and if Marth if he makes his likely return, argueably threaten Roy's return on their own.

Now, I think I've made some valid points, and I think I avoided basing them on speculation. I didn't think Roy would return, but writing this honestly changed my mind. I think Roy is worth it. But that's not what this thread is for. I want to know if you agree or not. (and please, don't just flame me on "OMFG I LIKE FOX AS A CHARACTER!!!1111 or " OMFG BOWSRE IS TEH BESTEST CHARACTER!!!111 or even "Tiers don't exist" or "Roy isn't worse than Marth" or "You suck". All of those things have already been discussed at length.)

1. If it was completely by Melee, than it's moot. From a developer's standpoint, it's easy enough to just put in another character and get the same effect, since the target audience doesn't care about the story. Of course if there is a alternative of a character who does have a well known story (such as Ike, and not Roy) then they will generate more interest.

2. Not a valid pro. Just a way out of his clone status. Still there isn't much that he can do that already hasn't been done, or be done by a better character.

3. F-Zero has had 9 games, and its own anime seres, not OVA, and will be most likely 1 character. Additionally, Roy doesn't deserve to take up the potential 3rd spot that Fire Emblem could get, and 3 is most likely the maximum.

4. Other character's unknown statues are not a factor into Roy's. Ness also is a much more special case as he is one of the originals and not a clone.

5. Very few people like Roy for who he is, because very few know him. This isn't valid.

6. Micaiah has white hair, a different hair style, a different weapon, and is a girl. How does Roy compare?

(P.S. Roy was not put into replace Sigurd. He was simply a promotional character.)

To counter your 5 and 6:
5. I disagree. I know quite a few people who like Roy outside of Smash (go to a Fire Emblem forum or even my school =P ), and I know a lot of people who think Roy is eons cooler than Marth. (Though I myself find Marth's style and bad-assedness to be cooler.) But I don't know if that point can really be argued too heavily.

6. Miciah is in one Fire Emblem, is not the main character for the whole of the game, and is obviously more of a hassle to add than Roy. And, if we already have one star of Radiant Dawn (and not even in that design), why have another? And to add to that, why use Path of Radiance Ike if you're adding Radiant Dawn characters?

Donkey Kong has 23 games all of which are worldwide and a long running cartoon series, it only has 2 characters, stop your belly aching.

5) Roy's actually the most hated lord. Mostly because many people disliked FE6 and also that Roy had bad growths. You're clearly not judging by who Roy really is, but rather what you build him up to be from his appearance.

6) She's the main character of FE10 plain and simple though. Hassle means nothing, unless you're suggesting that Sakurai take the easy way out and just make people clones. It's also much more profitable to back a game that is recent than a old one for a outdated system. (Using PoR Ike separate him further from RD, which is actually quite the obvious move when there is consideration to add a RD character..)

to the OP:
Granted I know diddly-squat about FE outside of SSB, if either Marth or Roy was coming back and it was my choice, I'd choose Roy simply because I like his playstyle better... and his armor

and his hair

It's not hopeless for Roy yet but he is not taking Micaiah's place.

Sorry in advance for this, but Micaiah is my favorite FE star, so I have to protect her.; >_<

6. Miciah is in one Fire Emblem, is not the main character for the whole of the game,
Micaiah has a minor part that was majorly speculated upon in Path of Radiance. A major fan would know that.

and is obviously more of a hassle to add than Roy.
"More of a hassle"? They've had about 3 years to make the game. Hassle isn't an issue with a team as large as Sakurai's.

And to add to that, why use Path of Radiance Ike if you're adding Radiant Dawn characters?
So they don't use a bunch of characters from Radiant Dawn? Duh :/

Sakurai made it clear with Castle Siege that he wasn't including only one FE game to represent the series.

Though I myself find Marth's style and bad-assedness to be cooler.
Oh yeah, with his badass tiara and the macho ability to play with his hair in the middle of a battle, he is MANLY.

EDIT: Oh yeah, this thread has DRAGONIZED.
