Am I the only one who thinks counters are (a bit) too O.P?

I feel as if the counter move found in several characters in the SSB4 game is just a bit unfair. The timing is a bit odd, I'll fake out an opponent and they'll fail to use their counter correctly, but then after about 2 seconds and I attack the counter still works. Not to mention with some characters like Ganondorf and Bowser who are mainly physical attackers the counter can make extremely hard to land any decent hits, especially if the opponent is spamming the counter move. I understand it's not that big a problem with some strategy and as long as you play a character with one or two projectiles it's not that bad, but I still find it rather annoying when I go against a character with a counter.

It's the grab button for the Gamecube controller. It's the L button on 3DS, in case that's what you use. Dunno about Wii U gamepad. Grabs can beat shield and counter. You can also use Ganondorf and Bowser's side-B to beat counters and shields since they are both command grabs.

No, counters are not even close to a bit OP. If you keep finding yourself getting countered a lot then you need to tone down being so aggressive. In the counter state, your opponent is still very susceptible to being grabbed, use it to your advantage. This also goes for command grabs, ie ganon's flame choke and bowser's flying slam.

I am not aware of what a shaking blue kayak means, if that is indeed what that is a picture of
That is for the GameCube Z button. However, not all players use the GameCube controller.

Basically, Counters are not foolproof, as they're useless against unblockable attacks (such as Little Mac's Guard Breaker and KO Uppercut), along with any moves that grab the opponent (Ex.: Flying Slam, Falcon Dive, Flame Choke). If you're finding yourself getting countered too often, you need to switch your attack strategy to throw off your adversary; for example, do a dash grab, instead of a dash attack.

@Diddy: I know it was him saying to go F-off

@everyone else: Firstly I can't believe I forgot this but I didn't mean competitive play, but more in general, and I did also forget to mention that I knew they weren't foolproof, but was just wondering if others were having problems with counters or also thought that they were a bit too strong, and thanks for the help everyone (except moi, go swim in a blue canoe yourself)

Sorry but I laughed a little too hard at this. He's saying to grab. Aside from Shulk's, all counters can be blocked on shield and fairly easily shield grabbed out of. Also keep in mind that whiffed or pre-emptive counters are big opportunities to punish so be sure to pay attention to your opponent's patterns and act accordingly.

if they start to spam counter just spam grab. counters arent that good unless you can read an attack comming for you other than that they are not a problem. your probably being way too aggressive for them to become op and if you are actually losing whole matches to just counter and no other move not trying to be mean but your opponent is probably dead laughing at you.

i wanna help you but you have to help yourself. if you get countered dont worry just try and grab him next time and goin off your 3ds and wii u mains in your profile side b with gannon will work too and for fox you can just run away and laser if you want to rack up damage and to make their counters look stupid (i love doing this with olimar because the pikmin hits trigger the counter so i can just throw on a couple an run away)

you have options when dealing with counters dont forget that and for challenging the counters after they been thrown up say you want to smash them (which since your having so much trouble the grab will be infinitely safer) wait a lil bit until the end lag kicks in and your good i wouldnt challenge shulks too much though his lingers for a while id just go for a grab on him.

Yea as people are saying here just pay attention to what youre doing when they throw up a counter. Then you can try to bait them into using counter and follow up with a grab and maybe further into a combo as punishment.

Counters are definitely annoying but they aren't OP. Just play less aggressively, bait out counters and punish accordingly

in the previous games counters did get a buff (correct me please if i'm wrong) but I don't see them op since they can be punished if not played too aggressive.

Counters do wicked damage, sure, but dont set yourself up for failure via counter.

You know what? You could take 1 counter, or even 2 counter hits in a row and not lose. When you know your opponent is considering countering you any second, try baiting it out. Remain neutral and just keep distance, but occasionally suddenly dash towards the opponent. Maybe the opponent will get scared and counter prematurely.

Grabbing is really a good way to get them to rethink their answers, but as I said, baiting counters out is also good, because you get to do a really strong attack while they're stuck in the animation thinking "why did i even counter"

grab and bait the counters with charged smashes...it's a good move to throw out the pocket every now and again but a person who counters often really shouldn't be beating you. anything gets predictable after a while and can be read.

just keep a cool head. if you're maining ganon the fear of a strong hit can easily bait a counter.
