I love smash tournaments, but aside from crews and low tier nobody ever tries fresh tournament formats in this community, just minor rule modifications in stages and match procedures. So I want to organize my next tourney at the art gallery to have these new formats as the main events. I'd probably throw one normal format tourney to increase attendance. After thinking about it, I agree with Kouryuu that stock rules are the best format for crews. So far I think these are the ones I wanna try:

1v1 no counterpicking format
3v3 crews, SBO style teams
?????

Anyone wanna see anything else?

Because it comes down to just having the best player! A team like Marthpwnzer/Jkun/Mango is likely to beat a team like M2K/Jman/DashizWiz! One person on one team can easily do the dirty work while the other two can go home then comeback to get their prize money! How is that fair?
this isnt really different from, say, me + mango winning teams at a local tourney

It is different.
because you're skills actually come into play during the match (even if a little bit)
While in the other format, you'd never have to play!

And, Jkun + Mango LOST at a local tournament, for example of the Jkun+Mango team..

Hey Mio, just make sure you have regular doubles as an event, regardless of what new idea you want to try out and you're good to go.

Also, are the 3v3 crews just regular crews with character locks from the beginning (during sign ups/SBO style) and CPs are limited to neutrals? Just need some clarification.

That's very different. I can come up with multiple combination of teams in Socal that would body you and Mango.

It's true that you could have 2 scrubs + Mango/Daigo carry a team to 1st place, and it's true that another overall team might have a higher overall balance of skill, but that's just like Michael Jordan carrying the Bulls to the finals. He had a few good teammates, but he was by far the most important part of the success on that team. Even though the other finalists may have had a better overall team, if they couldn't stop Jordan they couldn't take the title. They didn't put training weights on Jordan every time he won a game for the Bulls. Similar to Jordan winning a game for the Bulls, why put a stock handicap on the overall team when one of their teammates wins a match for them?
Basketball is different because you have many players playing at the SAME time! It's not a 1v1 match like it would be in a fighting game! If that were the case then Jordan can literally team with a bunch of elementary kids and still come out on top!

How about character locked teams?
Or is that too far?

I like the sound of it.
SBO style =

3 members on each team
No duplicate characters on each team/each character has to be different.
Players must register their characters during sign ups (i.e. character locks throughout the tournament).

I love it.

people get carried in teams all the time

both situations involve worse players getting farther than they should

but youre right probably not to finals, and a bunch of other ****

i would still argue that its a legitimate format for a tournament, if anyone disagrees
