I just have a question for everyone in this thread: Would you have added WFT?

Thought so. That is why Sakurai is the hero Smash deserves... but not the one it needs right now.
Wii Fit Trainer didn't exist prior to Nintendo 64, to my knowledge. I could be wrong of course. Not really though.

No, I didn't. I'm not blind, you know, I could clearly see the purpose was to have a fun game where a fan plays the role of the director. But, for the leisure of people who have no skills of deduction, and my lacking in explanation, I'll edit my post.
Nope. Still missed the point. Any one could have been the guy to say "let's used well known character to help sale the game" which is the point of this theortical thread, that it was you working at HAL when this came down the pipeline and YOU spoke up.

My mistake. :( I thought that this was for Smash Bros. games up until the present.
Well, I did say you can talk about any other Smash Bros too, so there there is no problem with discussing Wii Fit Trainer.

NINTENDO 64 (1999? 2000? I dunno.)

Same, except for a few things.
  • Captain Falcon's a starter.
  • Banjo and Kazooie Bear Witness! Their gameplay style would be Ice Climbers except with less separation of both characters.
  • Meowth Pounces Headlong! Gets in over Jiggs because he's basically the anti-Pikachu in the anime.
    • Bubble Beam (Neutral B): Forcefully spits out bubbles.
    • Slash (Up B): Up-and-forward slice with his claws.
    • Pay Day (Down B): Shields himself with a giant coin. Good for blocking and reflecting.
  • Pit Descends from High! His moves reflect the NES and Game Boy games. His gameplay in Hypo!SSB1 is a bit more defensive than in Brawl and SSB4, but that’s going to change in due time…
  • A somewhat unrelated tidbit: Final Smashes are in from the get-go, just because the developer can (Yay!). The moves themselves are always on; without Smash Balls, one would have to deal 200% damage in one stock without defeating anyone – or being defeated themselves – to activate their Final Smash.
    • Meowth's would be "Team Scratch Cat," in which several Meowth dressed up as Team Rocket Grunts rush across the stage to bombard and pester the other fighters.
    • Banjo and Kazooie get some wave-motion Jiggy gun, which the Jinjos help them lug.

GAMECUBE (2003? 2004? I dunno.)

  • Unlike how Sakurai did things, Bowser will always have his SSB4 playstyle. I mean really, who wouldn't want a big, scary turtle beast running around and going all lucha libre on everyone's butt?
  • Daitoryo Plays the Right Cards! Looks and plays the same as in the reveal trailer I wrote for him. The Hanafuda!President is just a placeholder for his actual Smash look.
  • Diddy Kong Jets In! Same as in Brawl.
  • King Dedede Drops the Hammer! Same as in Brawl, right down to Hypo!Sakurai voicing him.
  • The Misty Wants to Fight! She would have gotten in just because barely anyone wanted her at the time. Smash!Misty basically has something like her FireRed outfit (but not exactly) and her HGSS hairdo, as seen in her portrait. Further differentiating her from anime!Misty is a Falco-esque voice for her, done by Cree Summer (Yuka Terasaki in Japan); as for personality, she would be one part hyperactive athlete, one part ditz, one part heart, and all parts tomboy (Basically, how I imagine her to be in my upcoming Nuzlocke).
    • Her Up/Down/Up taunt (Doesn't need to be inputted as fast) is simply her way of switching out Pokémon. This will also apply to Zelda and (later) Samus.
    • Starmie: Uses non-Water moves for its Specials (E.g, Psychic is Up-B; works like Greninja's Hydro Cannon or whatever), but is content with channeling its main type for everything else. Better off at medium-to-long range than up close.
      • Thunder (Neutral B): You guide a fast-acting reticle for a second, after which Starmie will channel its inner sniper and unleash electric bullets.
      • Confuse Ray (Side B): Mainly for anti-shield game.
      • Rapid Spin (Down B): Reflects projectiles.
    • Lapras: A ridiculously sluggish character, and also the heaviest (Would be half as big as Giga Bowser). Basically the tank of the three.
      • Ice Beam (Neutral B): Lightning fast and to the point. Ricochets off of surfaces like R.O.B.'s Laser.
      • Dragon Dance (Side B): Based off of Raptor Boost, except if you charge it for too long, Lapras takes 1% damage every 1.5 seconds.
      • Whirlpool (Up B): Some random Whirlpool fizzes up from under Lapras and pulls him back up from the jaws of defeat. Recharges if you're not using it.
      • Body Slam (Down B): Lapras pounces forward, underside first, and lands with a resounding stamp. Works about the same as Little Mac's Jolt Haymaker.
    • Kabutops: Balanced between Starmie's speed and Lapras' defensive capabilities. If this long-lost huntress gets you, don't get hit!
      • Ancient Power (Neutral B): Kabutops dumps barrages of whip-sharp pebbles a few steps ahead of herself.
      • Fury Cutter (Side B): Sort of a power-up move. The more you combo before using Fury Cutter, the faster and stronger it will be.
      • Swords Dance (Up B): Spiral uppercut, and then volleyball-like serve. This serves (No pun intended) as a painful Meteor Smash.
      • Sand Attack (Down B): Kabutops throws down a chunk of sand where she's standing. Anyone caught up in this sand blast receives gradual damage.
    • Misty's Final Smash is Triple Finish, except with the name Torrent; Starmie does Hydro Pump, Lapras decides Blizzard is tops for the occasion, and Kabutops uses her Strength to chuck Rock Tombs from above.
    • If any one of Misty's Pokémon takes enough damage and then gets KO'd, she'll automatically send out the next Pokémon in rotation.
  • Sonic Hogs the Spotlight! And the fans SING TEARS OF JOY at the opportunity to relive the Console Wars of old...with a knock-down, drag-out battle, no less. Same as his actual SSB4 incarnation.
  • Slash gets remapped to Meowth's Side B. His new Up B is Feint Attack, a pounce not unlike Sonic's Homing Attack.

WII (Sometime between 2008 and 2010)

  • Misty's Pokémon get improved in a few areas.
    • Kabutops' fully charged Fury Cutter becomes Its Most Grand High Exaltedness, Slayer of the Dragon of Minerals, and Defender of the Meta: Saint Close Combat. 5% damage to the Shellfish Pokémon, a la the canon Defense penalties, is the trade-off for this very special technique. Misty herself has a rare chance to shout "Now! SIC 'EM!" every time you use this.
    • Starmie can't just aim its Thun--erm, Shock Wave--anywhere anymore. However, the move hits harder and has a brief Paralyzer effect.
    • Lapras' Dragon Dance hits harder and acts faster (Especially at full charge), but has the same self-damage rate as Dedede's Jet Hammer.
  • Sonic's moveset matures significantly; now he plays exactly like in Project M, except his D-air always semi-spikes.
  • Wario has some elements lifted from Project M as well as what he'll have in SSB4 (Should he be confirmed).
  • Meta Knight is unlockable just because we need an unlockable Kirby rep. Also P:M moveset.
  • Oh, wait. Banjo is demoted to non-existent because Microsoft made him LOSE HIS WAAAAAAAAAA-- (Nice-lookin' sword montage!) Joking aside, this is where Sonic becomes a surrogate for the bear and bird thanks to his history with Ninty.
  • Dixie Kong Goes for a Spin! Part of her moveset would somehow include a guitar solo. Minus that and the hair, she's a quarter-clone, if you will, of Diddy.
  • Mr. Game & Watch Can`t Miss!
  • Pac-Man Crunches into Battle! Same as the moveset I laid out in his SSB4 thread, except he's voiced by Bryce Papenbrook and has his Pac-Man World look. (Hey, that rhymed!)
  • Saki Cuts Through! Take his Assist Trophy self, slap it onto some of his tilts and specials, and bam. Sin & Punishment/Treasure rep right there. :V
  • Villager Comes to Town! Same as in SSB4, right down to the Final Smash.

WII U AND 3DS (2014? 2015? I dunno.)

  • Pac gets over his Hypo!Brawl look and voice with a lot of help from PMatGA. Because hey, everyone needs a facelift once in a while. Also, other Bamco games get references via his moves!
    • His Dash attack is rolling a Katamari. If it poofs in the air, anyone caught will get Meteor'd.
    • Down Smash is using Lloyd's swords instead of chomping at both sides. This results in more upward knockback.
  • Misty's Pokémon each have their own Final Smash.
    • Psycho Boost (Starmie): Constantly dizzies foes, and weakens them in favor of powering up Starmie. This lasts for ten seconds.
    • Sheer Cold (Lapras): Lapras lets out a big, meaty roar, summoning lightning bolts made of ice (Get it? BoltBeam? HEY-O!). Anything that bothers to exist is KO'd, no ifs, ands, or buts.
    • Rock Wrecker (Kabutops): Kabutops looks like she's hitting enemies with the first hit of Close Combat...but then the game gets all cinematic as Kabutops rolls up and kicks a ton of explosive meteors which throttle down to crush and explode whoever's caught.
  • Chrom Answers the Outrage!
  • Isaac Brings the Dawn! His moveset would consist of a mix of Psynergy and close-range combat, allowing for a good long-range game as well.
  • Little Mac Punches In!
  • Mega Man Joins the Battle!
  • It`s All about Mii Like I said, I believe these guys would be the Dural of Smash Bros; whatever you have as your Nintendo Network Mii will be your in-game Mii, so barely anyone has to worry about inappropriate faces online.
    • Serve (Neutral B): A fast tennis ball-launching move. The balls behave like Snake's grenades, except they disappear instead of exploding.
    • Strike Out (Side B): Just like Dedede's Gordo/Waddle Dee Toss, except Mii aggressively rolls a bowling ball. And can keep doing so up to four times. :V
    • Drag-and-Drop (Up B): Mii gets pulled up by a Wiimote hand for two or three seconds or until it stops moving. It behaves like a poor man's Super Sonic.
    • Tilt (Down B): Mii pops into ball, you roll with Control Stick toward hapless victim, ball crashes, hapless victim takes moderate damage. More damage can be dealt the faster your Mii goes.
    • Tomodachi Power (Final Smash): Whatever characters are caught in the activation radius will pop out of the Earth like in here. When they come back down, they'll be suffering pretty nasty damage, if not getting outright KO'd.
  • Palutena Sheds Some Light!
  • Ridley Looms Above!
  • Rosalina & Luma Launch into Battle!
  • Shantae Calls the Tune! To me, Shantae is the only indie character who would deserve a spot in Smash. Has what's basically a stance system (Which I described as part of my trailer for her and Daitoryo) which controls her choice of certain moves via Neutral B (Groove Mode, for those curious). This means she's always in half-genie form, so as to not stress out the developers.
  • Trevenant Mongers Fear! There, you have your Grass-type. Trev is bulky in its own series, so that translates to being the Bowser of the Pokémon series. Not like it isn't going to have new moves to fit its typing, though...
  • Wolf Thrashes into the Hunt!
  • So yeah, alt costumes. Here are some reasonable examples.
    • Misty - HGSS outfit! And Shiny Pokémon, as well.
    • Pac-Man - World look.
    • Luigi - Mr. L in non-Paper form.
    • Isaac - Matthew.
    • Meta Knight - His "butterfly samurai" look as seen in concept art and P:M.
    • Sonic - The mysterious mask he dons somewhere in Sonic CD. Either that, or Classic Sonic.

I'm surprised that anyone here thinks they would come up with C.Falcon's moveset or even including ROB and G&W

Hrmmm. Probably would have been a traditional, one-versus-one fighter with zany super moves. I would have wanted the series to debut on the SNES when arcade fighters were all the rage. Guest characters would have been allowed from the start, as well as help from other companies. For example, SNK or Capcom handling the sprites. As for characters...

Mario
Luigi
Bowser
Toadstool
Donkey Kong (pre-DKC version)
Link
Samus
Pit
Little Mac
Kirby
Simon Belmont
Mega Man

The Captain N reunion was entirely coincidental, honest.

This would be difficult as **** to balance, probably harder than any fighting game in existence, and it would likely be much harder to add characters than the current incarnation of Smash. It would likely be a huge mess from any competitive standpoint, but I would love to see it, if only for some sort of sick morbid curiosity.

But I would have made most characters actually stay true to their own style of gameplay, though taking some freedoms for characters that can't be directly "translated."

So what exactly does this mean?

Mario's gameplay would completely depend on trying to jump on characters head, he'd be a very high-risk high-reward type of guy, as he would be able to get many hits. He'd have access to some powerups too, which you'd have to use strategically, as each one of them both give you an extra attack, and give you an extra hit point.

Link would heavily be based on Zelda II, his shield would automatically protect him from any attacks, but you have to aim it properly. Would also have his spells and a magic bar. Also, sword beam on full health because yes.

I'm finding it hard to imagine a way for Samus not to be extremely OP, 8-directional aiming alone is just crazy, but would be needed to properly recreate Super Metroid gameplay.

So yeah, you can mostly imagine how this would turn out, likely won't really work, but I really, really want to see it.

My Smash 64 roster would probably be...
:mario64::luigi64::link64::fox64::dk64::pikachu64::yoshi64::samus64: with :001: and :marthmelee: tossed in. Marth would be a momentary WTF for everything out of Japan, and Bulbasaur cause I'm the guy in charge so screw you.

Melee would have no cuts, and I'd add :wolf:, :diddy:, :sheilda:,:bowser2:, :mewtwopm:, and :235:. That would be the only additions, really. I'd focus more on balance and features, rather than size.

Brawl would add :lucario:, :ganondorf:, :olimar: as starters... and I'll continue later.

As for Kirby and Donkey Kong characters, I would add one character per game.

I would make a game centered around gameplay. Multiplayer would be fleshed out to include a diverse stage selection with items, handicaps, custom controls and more. Single player would also include many different modes to keep you entertained when playing alone. Characters are fleshed out and designed to be easy to use, but difficult to master because they're deep. This comes at the cost of the quantity of characters, but I've always been quality>quantity anyways.

So my roster for Smash 64 is as follows:
Mario, Bowser, Link, Samus, Kirby, Donkey Kong, Yoshi, Pikachu, Mewtwo, Fox, Captain Falcon (Total: 10)

and for Melee:
Peach, Diddy Kong, Ness, Zelda/Sheik, Meta Knight, Excitebiker, Charizard, Marth, Wario (Total: 20)

and for Brawl:
Olimar, Luigi, King Dedede, Ice Climbers, Pit, Wolf, Sonic, Mega Man, Mr. Game and Watch, Ganondorf (Total: 30)

and for Smash 4:
Rosalina, King K. Rool, Lucario, Greninja, Palutena, Pac Man, Mii, Marshall, Ness, Chrom+Lucina, Balloon Fighter, Wii Fit Trainer, Simon Belmont (Total: 42)

I'd prefer if it was that he worked for another company or something rather than never existing.

Although, I doubt I could come up with anything more than a clone of another fighter really.

Hm.

Honestly we don't know at which point Sakurai started messing with the SSB "personally". If I was asked for making a massive crossover party-fitting game, I would probably end up with something more similar to an FPS than SSB as we know it. Yes, I am aware of Dragon King stuff, and If I was given the Dragon King, I would probably make it a party-fitting game, but would not dare suggest making it a crossover.

But there's the opening post anyway. It is 1998, SSB already is a crossover fighting game with most Smash mechanics, and all I'm supposed to do is a roster. Now obviously my imagination may cover too much, but here's how it goes:
  • Mario and Luigi as the Ice Climbers like team, except with some swap mechanic of sorts. Skipping Luigi is a bad idea. Including him as a clone seems to be even worse one at the moment. The original Luigi stuff is not really too sophisticated yet.
  • Pokemon represented as Trainer, specifically designed as the most gimmicky and complex character of the game - think something like half Sheilda, half Brawl Pokemon Trainer, half its own thing.
  • Link, Samus, Kirby and Donkey Kong implemented similarly to what really happened. Well, Kirby gets more stolen moves, as he's the "starter" character now, and this is how the player is supposed to learn about other chars, etc.... This raises a little problem - why is it Mario that uses a DKC mechanic? Well, stuff happens I guess.
  • Fox and Falcon are there. They're using their vehicles a little more though.
  • No Yoshi since that sounds like Mario overkill - DK is pushing it.
  • Ness or Ninten is gonna be the backburner character, as while in theory he works fairly nicely, I'm not sure what the hell is going on with EarthBound.
  • You're getting Marth or Sigurd to get a swordsman different than Link, the master of hammerspace.
  • You're getting a Pilotwings representative, as this ties nicely into idea of having a character with great recovery and not so great everything else.
I am not really sure what would happen later. But some things are already visible. No Shielda, as that's the Pokemon Trainer gimmick now. Most probably no ICs, as their gimmick is taken by Mario and Luigi. Most probably Zelda would get in however, as would Yoshi and Bowser. As for Ganondorf, not yet - we're getting other Link with wildly different special moves. Another Pokemon Trainer, maybe Mewtwo as himself. Most probably no Peach, as I refuse to come up with her abilities out of thin air.

Sounds like quite a mess in the long run.

The first game would be for the Nintendo 64 in 1998. The gameplay is in health bars rather than percentages, and there are a lot more combos than the current Smash Bros.

Mario, Link, Samus, C. Falcon, Pikachu: The (at the time) Nintendo-all stars, shoe ins.
Yoshi, DK: Nintendo classics
Fox, Pit, Banjo-Kazooie: Secondary Nintendo all-stars (besides Banjo)
Ness: Added as a last-minute character
Muddy: A loopy character that almost didn't make it

When the I was the one who created Dragon King and Miyamoto came in and told me I could use Nintendo characters.

I would've used Nintendo characters mainly in human form and/or humanoid as the Dragon King was solely consisting C.Falcon-like fighters. Yoshi was only non-human fighter. I would've had every Pokemon as pokeballs.

64 (12)
:luigi64: || :mario64::dk64::link64::ganondorfmelee: || :falcon64:
:warioc: || :yoshi64::fox64::samus64::marthmelee: || :ness64:

In Melee, I will finally introduce playable Pokemon with some other non-human fighters but never considered retro characters pre-64 era and never considered Zelda, just Sheik. Also never considered 2nd Link.

Melee (22)
:bowsermelee::mariomelee::luigimelee::peachmelee::dkmelee::4diddy::yoshimelee::warioc:
:wolf: :foxmelee::samusmelee::kirbymelee::dedede::linkmelee::ganondorfmelee::sheikmelee:
_ :pikachumelee::charizard::marthmelee::roymelee::nessmelee::falconmelee: _

Retro characters considered due to lack of character choice post-64, didn't thought of A.T.. Didn't need to cut because never thought of transformations and roster size already at 32. Will say Olimar has no good fighting potential than Villager.

Brawl (32)
:bowser2::mario2::luigi2::peach::dk2::diddy::yoshi2::warioc::marth::roymelee::ike:
:wolf::fox:krystal:samus2::zerosuitsamus::kirby2::dedede::metaknight::ness2::lucas::4villager:

I'm considering that, just as Sakurai, the game uses the engine of Dragon King as it was the initial project. I'm also considering that Sakurai did existed, just wasn't involved with Smash, FE comes to West after Melee and KI gets the revival in 2012. My reasoning will only be for characters that weren't originally added to that game

I always thought that 64 should had only miscelaneous franchises(counting Yoshi and DK as separate series), I would also never add C. Falcon.
Reasoning:
Pit- I played the original, so, it was some bias
Marth- FE had a lot of games already in Japan, screw America
G&W- He is the beginning of Nintendo's history

I used a diferent method for deciding the roster: "Has the series got any new games recently?", with that, DDD and Diddy are added, some of the original Melee newcomers are also added, IC because bias, Muddy Mole as the Miscellaneous newcomer(and bias)

No third parties, I want Smash to be consisted of Nintendo characters
K. Rool- Would have been added in Melee, but Diddy had overprioritized him
Mewtwo isn't cut
Ridley- The Metroid series grew a lot between Melee and Brawl, as the main villain, he gets his spot on the roster
Villager- AC is a huge success, I will never understand Sakurai's "too peaceful"

I now focus on more miscellaneous series, but first Robin and Medusa are added for their series popularity
Greninja because I'm super biased
Saki, Shulk, Ray, Starfy, Little Mac, Isaac, Chibi-Robo and Takamaru(as the retro rep) are all added to represent more miscellaneous franchises and due to fan request, again, I'm a super biased game director, so Wonder-Red and Dillon are also added
The Yellow line ones are a funny idea I had, I call them the "Super Secret Characters", you can only unlock them after unlocking the initial roster and receiving the message that you unlocked all the characters(I'm such a troll, aren't I?), Mewtwo is unlocked after 40 hours of playtime; Skull Kid because of fan demand is unlocked by beating Adventure Mode on Hard with Ganondorf without using continues; Kraid is the most biased choice, you have to beat one of the Event Matches, you play as Ridley fighting other Ridleys in the smallest stage in the game for 3 minutes all of them have Super Mushrooms; and Goku is just to hear people's reactions once they find out that a character called Goku is in the game(if Sakurai taught me anything, is that you do everything for the laughs
