All Character Battle - guidance needed

As the topic suggests, I'm going to be doing an all character battle MM with this guy in my dorm.

I'd say I'm ok at the game: I z-cancel all my aerials, I can combo with a few characters but not all, and I have decent edgeguarding, though again only with a few characters (the ones I regularly use). My DI is pretty bad, usually just simply up or right/left depending on the trajectory of the attack. I don't even know wtf slide di is, and I never smash di, but that's not what I'm here for right now. Moving on.

I play pikachu, kirby, fox, falcon, and link. But I need help with the rest of the cast. I'd appreciate just some basic bread and butter strategies with the characters I didn't name.

I'll just fill you in on what I do in the rare instances I do use other characters besides the 5 aforementioned:

Samus - Bair excessively. Up-b OoS. Dair into a lot of things (tech chase, another dair, bair, foward smash, etc). Bomb recovery.

Mario - Fireballs whenever I get the chance. Up air to juggle if I can land it, usually ending in forward air. And from there I'm kind of at a loss.

Luigi - The only thing I ever try to do with luigi is land uair to reverse up-b. However, with both of mario and luigi I don't know how to approach or set up their combos and usually hope to luck into that first uair.

DK - Bair, throw them off and try to spike.

Ness, yoshi, and jiggs I never touch so I don't even know where to begin. Except maybe abuse grabs with ness, but that's about it.

So yeah, BnB stuff please, with a few pointers concerning approaches/combo starters as well. Thanks.

Jake is definitely dropping Yoshi
Easy puff combo: Down-air to rest. Very basic, and can kill... depending on where you are on the stage.

If you're against a heavy character, up-tilt to short-hop down-air is a pretty good combo (assuming they don't DI well).

Ness, up-tilt combos into itself, depending on the character.

Don't abuse grabs with Ness unless they have huge gaps. U-Tilt starts combos, you might wanna practice DJC U-Air, D-Air and B-Air, the other two aren't quite as useful. Practice recovery, you might be able to recover properly if your opponent isn't being super serious. Ness's strengths are punishing heavies and gimping (he's one of the best gimpers imho).

Yoshi takes a while to get used to, and is really, really hard to learn quickly. DJC is a starting point, learn timing for DJC F-Air, B-Air and U-Air to start with. N-Air and D-Air are also important, but the first three are important for approach and comboing (U-Air). Don't try to attack the opponent with an aerial as you recover, this quintriples your vulnerability to being gimped (Yoshi is otherwise impervious to low percent edgeguarding). Up-B is a good projectile. Yoshi can wreck heavies and (once you're good with him) do lots of cool things to everyone not named Samus/Luigi.

Jiggs is pretty simple, read your opponent and D-Air/F-Throw to start a combo. Plenty of videos that show how to play her can be found all over youtube. If you aren't confident with landing Rest, a smash or U-Air is also fine. She's a glass cannon who needs some prediction, you can't just run in and win (even if the opponent is a nub). She can easily beat the crap through anyone, but most characters can do the same to her.

jiggs is fairly easy, dair utilt rest. yoshi and ness require a little more practice to get used to because of djc. with yoshi approach with bair, fair and running a. uair combos are fairly useful on heavies too (utilt, uair)

Just watch videos of good people playing each character, and keep practicing.

Can't really explain a character, most of the skills you need to learn can only be obtained through lots of playing.

Ness - Uptilt, comboes into itself and other attacks, has good priority
Yoshi - Uptilt, comboes into itself and other attacks, has good priority

Samus - Should probably just save Samus for Jiggs, because that matchup is actually somewhat ok for Samus because of Bair wall and Dair -> Bair or Dair -> fully charged shot

Mario - If you guys aren't like, top notch players ... Drill to Grab to edgeguard. Raaaaape. I won a tournament vs. decent but not really good players using almost exclusively this haha. Mario is floaty enough that most characters have trouble comboing him.

Luigi - land stupid Dair combos if he doesn't know how to DI. Just Dair -> Uair until you can Up-b him to death ~.~

DK - Fthrow -> Jump toss -> Up-b -> edgeguard on heavy chars. Fthrow -> Jump toss -> Giant punch apparently works on Jiggs? Dair -> Upsmash, Bair outspaces just about everyone...

Ness is dumb. Camp the ledge and dashdance grab haha

Yoshi you'd have to learn how to double jump cancel Upairs vs heavy chars, it's not that hard really. Also, Upsmash out of shield = raaaaaape, that head is sooooo big. Dash attack is so good edgeguarding haha. Dash attack combos into runoff Fair on most chars.
Easiest Yoshi combo vs people who don't DI is UpTilt -> Dair -> UpTilt -> Dair -> UpSmash ~_~

Jiggs - Uair -> Uair ... -> rest
Uptilt -> rest
Fthrow -> rest
Drill -> rest
Anything -> rest
~_~

If you don't yet, try learning how to pivot Fsmash if people are too hasty jumping off that ledge.
If you guys can't DI, abuse drills.
Never go into the tent of doom on Hyrule if you're facing a DK. Camp down there if you are DK. Learn to tent of doom combo (chaingrab ~_~) with DK to counterpick him maybe xD
You can chaingrab quite a few chars in the tent ... it's pretty silly ~_~
Hope you're abusing Uair as Falcon haha

Don't get hit ~_~

Thanks for the help. I won, with two characters to spare. I had the hardest time playing as yoshi and almost let him get back into the match because of how badly i did with yoshi. Otherwise the tips were useful, so again, thanks.

that head is sooooo big
that's what she said

Normal DI (just holding a direction) does absolutely nothing in this game. If you want to DI, you need to smash or slide DI in order to see any real effect. Check out the thread on DI here:

Anyway congrats on winning! Now start playing online. Play him again in a few months and win with 4 chars left. Then 6. Then 8. Then ETC
