alcohol: tier list, and beer

BEER is the best form of alcohol. i'm convinced people that think they don't like beer have not yet tried a legitimately good one. actually most that do like beer still probably havent had a really good craft brew (sam adams, corona, asahi, and the like ARE NOT good beers).

beer is not just for drinking games. believe it or not, good beers actually DO taste good and can compliment a meal quite nicely. i think what draws me to beer is the diversity; it's something different every time. my introduction to amazing beer was when we drove down to san diego to Stone's brewery to try their newly released (it was aged 2 years) 2006 Russian Imperial Stout. it was like silky, creamy chocolate coffee in my mouth, firing off what must have been every pleasure center in my brain. the scent of the beer up and filled my nostrils for a good hour and a half or so reminding me exactly how that first taste felt. i thought it couldnt get better. then i tried Russian River's Consecration. and holy crap, it was sour. it tasted like cherries and vanilla and all sorts of complexities i'm not talented enough to identify individually, but am good enough to recognize they come together well. btw think sour cherry beer is weird? try a banana pepper beer. or a spicy beer.

i've actualy tried a beer that literally tasted like waffles on a saturday morning. yes, specifically on a saturday morning. remember that scene at the end of ratatouille where
upon tasting the ratatouille, Anton Ego remembers his childhood?
well, mine tasted like eggos and cartoons.

find me another form of alcohol that can do that.
(and let me know, id love to try it.)

and because this is smashboards, i feel a tier list must be discussed.
my alcohol tier list

-good beer (the bruery, russian river, etc.) - tastes good, gets you buzzed or hammered, still good for drinking games, very diverse and just overall versatile

-good wine/good liquor/good cocktails - wines can taste good, but are too expensive and aren't as interesting as cocktails. wines are probably my least favorite in this tier. cocktails, when made well, just taste good, and get u f'd up. liquor is inexpensive and gets you hammered quickly and painlessly if shot.

bad cocktails/bad liquor/bad beer (bud, coors, miller) - these are at least functional. bad liquor gets you hammered at low cost (how much is pain worth?), and bad beer is cheap and provides you with a ton of possible games.

bad wine - nothing to offer to me. slow to get drunk, tastes bad, not cost efficient, not even fun. and give me worse hangovers than any of the above.

in short, beer *****. find a good one.

dantefox's post reminded me

this topic sucks for a multitude of reasons
1) whiskey isn't at the top of the tier list
2) there's a giant rant about beer at the top that no one gives a **** about
3) the tier list is poorly formed. the strata* used are too broad. the quality of the alcohol in question comes down to a binary proposition to you: either it's good or it's bad. there's no mention of things that exist in the middle of the two. lumping all cocktails/mixed drinks together is preposterous.

it really seems like this topic is just a platform for you to show off your cool beer knowledge. which no one gives a **** about.

*tell me if this doesnt mean what i think it means

SS Tier: Ginger Beer

Brian your use of 'strata' is acceptable. As is your use of 'binary proposition.'

sorry about being a horrible poster, but this isn't me showing off beer knowledge. i just posted cuz i too often hear something like "i hate beer because ive tried corona/heineken but theyre just not good." im rather passionate about beer (my friends and i started experimenting with brewing our own) and just wanted to tell people about a world of beers that is unfortunately unknown to many. the first beer people try makes the impression, and i think people too often first try beers that just aren't very good.

you're right, the list does suck. maybe i shouldnt have called it a tier list, because its just the order in which i would choose what to drink. if its something neither good nor bad, the order would be (any kind of) liqor, cocktail, wine, then beer. the good/bad labels aren't really about what i personally think of the drink, they refer to the generally accepted opinion of the drink among those who are knowledgeable.

so if a friend that is experienced with cocktails tells me that the bar makes a good sex on the beach, but theyre bad at long island iced teas, ill drink the sex on the beach over the iced tea (even though i generally like teas better) and whatever mediocre beer they have.

ive actually been looking into whiskey recently upon my brothers suggestion. any i should try?

as far as sam adams goes, some of their styles are better than others. and as far as commercial beers go, senor adams is probably your best bet if you're not already used to the crazy hopiness of Stone's beers. and i will admit, stone's beers have been getting worse. their stouts since 2006 have not been nearly as good. maybe theyve been releasing them too soon, idk. but 'good beers' will generally just do what sam adams does except hide the alcohol, and have a wider range of stronger, well balanced flavors. and itll probably have a higher ABV.

and only being able to find great beers in europe is a very common misconception. california alone has a lot of great breweries, and there are sites like beeradvocate.com that make it easy for users to find beers and trade them to people for beer from other regions in the U.S.

getting ***** by cheap liquor is sooo much fun im not saying i dont drink cheap liquor. but if ive saved up for a while, id obviously rather get ***** on slightly more expensive alcohol. . .

ive been saving up for a while for this tuesday. The Bruery is re-releasing their stout called "black tuesday" on the 27th. its a really thick, heavy beer that comes in at about 20% abv and tastes amazing. i tried it on the first release at like $8 a glass (about that rate anyway), but theres so much hype now that theyre putting it in bottles now at $30 per bottle. i sound crazy, but im buying a couple bottles and im gonna sell them at at least 2x the price. if you wanna try a few different beers, for 20 bucks you can get two 4oz. pours of black tuesday or a variation of it called Chocolate Rain, and two 8 oz pours of any of their other beers on tap. you also get a tulip shaped glass or something.

so if you're interested and you don't mind crowds, go to The Bruery in placentia on tuesday oct. 27th and bring at least 23 dollars (after tip). or just go any other day, avoid the crowd, and spend significantly less, but then you dont get black tuesday.

what do u guys like to party with (vodka, rum, etc)?

the problem i have fine wine is money. you have to shell out sooo much money for the best wines. thats actually the reason i started off with beers--the best ones are usually less than 30, and excellent ones are between 10-15 (as opposed to hundreds or thousands for wine). i plan on chekcing out fine wines when im older and have a good job. hopefully.

but wine and cheese IS really good.

tequila is always a great time. for some reason it feels like a different kind of drunk for me, its hard to explain. its the same for cheap or expensive tequila, so its good for cheap ***** like me. i cant say the same for vodka though. and this is coming from a guy who's gotten drunk off salty asian cooking wine. i drink anything but really cheap vodka. NEVER GET KAMCHATKA VODKA.

lol yeah adam we can be friends where do u go to school
