Brawl and melee are more than this boring character to character matchup **** that every other fighting game does. Items and Multiplayer are what set our game apart.

the level of competition was surprisingly high for a charity tournament, even though we ***** like everyone there. I LOLed @ finals, we should have played a serious set rather than that ganon/link bull ****, but oh well it was all good :)

i really wanted to play derrek and arthur though, i wanted to see if there really as good as you and everyone else say they are.

Adrian you are the ****ing greediest piece of **** I've ever known, **** you, I don't even care if you've been part the community for a while, this is just beyond anything I would have thought someone like you would do. That tournament was raising money for charity!

The term sandbagging is so lame. It's disrespectful to both players IMO. I often get called out when losing a match against local players here and they're like "why were you sandbagging?". I hate when that kind of stuff happens. What if I just lost? I can't play always the same, you won now shut up.

I've seen this a lot on this board, where people talk about legitimate johns and where people suggest that pros are sandbagging. So I need to edumacate you all so that you know exactly what these terms refer to because the way some of you use them suggests you do not understand. I'm not targeting one specific poster here; lots of people have done this in various topics. These are two of the most used terms in competitive melee that aren't techniques or tactics, and while I know that this topic won't revolutionize everyone's mindset, I hope that it will at least reduce the level of ignorance by a little bit.

No johns

What it means
The common mixup people make is that they confuse this phrase with "Your excuses are not valid." That is NOT what no johns is. No johns is a statement to get someone to stop complaining, whether the complaint is legitimate or not. In other words, it means "Accept your circumstances."

What you shouldn't say
Therefore, it's not legit to say that something isn't a john, it's a real excuse. Maybe it is, but it's still a john. Yes, no johns did originate from a person who used bad excuses, but the definition is not limited to only such.

Sandbagging

What it means
So there are two kinds of sandbagging, and the difference is something I've never seen anyone mention, but it's quite important. The first is what Isai used to be notorious for. He would intentionally play down for no direct purpose other than to lower his level during a match. This definition of sandbagging is equivalent to "going easy on someone."

There is another kind of sandbagging that I know people recognize (because I see youtubers post "It looks like he's sandbagging in this video" on the appropriate matches). But I don't think they realize that it's different. This sandbagging is where you play below your optimal level, but for the purpose of being showy or trying out tactics. Mango is an example of such play. There are some (NOT many as people assume) videos where Mango does not wreck as crazy as he usually does. Now, in a portion of these videos, Mango is actually trying out different tactics or trying to end the match by showing off. This is why he *sometimes* does poorly.

What you shouldn't say
I don't think it's quite accurate to say "Mango/Zhu/whoever else isn't trying hard in this video." These players may lower their level of play in one match, but they do it with the intention of increasing their long term abilities. So they are trying hard, just for something else.

Also, smashers need to be more careful about when they call out a sandbag. I see it used so liberally, as if all pros just want to sandbag all the time. From a rational standpoint, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense for players to sandbag as often as they are accused of. Think about it-these pros are smashing for money. Combine that with the whole innate human psychology of the drive to win (even when there is no reward), social pressure, and a number of other factors, and the result is that it is extremely unlikely that pros sandbag often. So let's not point fingers so much, ok?

tl;dr
No johns applies to all excuses, whether legitimate or not. It just means don't complain about your circumstances.

It's not likely that pros sandbag as much as we accuse them of, so we shouldn't keep hypothesizing that someone was sandbagging just because he did worse than usual. It's more likely that he was just not playing well, or his opponent was playing better, or he was testing out a different style to improve in the long run. There are few explicit reasons for a pro to really sandbag.

Adrian, seriously, SHUT UP.

I have tried to stay out of this for as long as possible, but even I have my limits. I know you're going to say I'm "causing drama" or whatever, but go ahead, I've long stopped caring what you thought of me. I have tried to be reasonable with you, I explained to you that a lot of the problems with tournaments/prizes were beyond my control. I have tried to be civil and stay out of your way at gatherings while you made snarky comments. Enough. I'm doing a lot to help individuals in the community and be a true friend and all I see is you coming on here and *****ing and going on Allisbrawl to *****; you wrote a blog about me when I did nothing to make you mad; I have always tried to be your friend. I know I can be a difficult person to get along with but to further prove my point look at the way you treat Orry; he has repeatedly tried to resolve whatever issue you have with him and you still have an attitude about it.

You say that the things I supposedly do are counterproductive to the community. I host tournaments, smashfests, and social events, and people have FUN. On the contrary, you hide tournaments because you think you are "owed" money since PnT didn't want to give third place (at least I'm assuming why), you make negative blogs and comments on your AiB profile directed specifically at certain people, making Alaska look bad in general, and you think I'M the problem here? As far as I can tell the community has been just fine since you've been gone.

Also, for the record, I've made it clear to your friends that I didn't expect them to choose sides between you and me, knowing you've been friends with them for years. If they say you're acting unreasonable, maybe it's because YOU'RE ACTING UNREASONABLE, not because I'm "mindgaming" people to think a certain way. I don't particularly care who comes to smashfests/tournaments as long as we can try to be civil or for heavens' sakes just IGNORE the people we don't get along with, as I've tried multiple times to do with you.

Good day!

I've actually no problem with Brad or anyone else, haha. @.@ I'm pretty much cool with being anyone's friend as long as they are cool with me.

I'm going to come home tomorrow, get comfortable in my top notch pajamas, bust out a hot cup of coffee, and sit down in my cushioned grandfather chair, only to switch my luxuries and nearly brand new Mac on. I better not see any junk in my beautiful Alaska thread. Leave this stuff to the pm's.
