That tournament was raising money for charity!
from gamefaqsThe term sandbagging is so lame. It's disrespectful to both players IMO. I often get called out when losing a match against local players here and they're like "why were you sandbagging?". I hate when that kind of stuff happens. What if I just lost? I can't play always the same, you won now shut up.
from gamefaqs tooI've seen this a lot on this board, where people talk about legitimate johns and where people suggest that pros are sandbagging. So I need to edumacate you all so that you know exactly what these terms refer to because the way some of you use them suggests you do not understand. I'm not targeting one specific poster here; lots of people have done this in various topics. These are two of the most used terms in competitive melee that aren't techniques or tactics, and while I know that this topic won't revolutionize everyone's mindset, I hope that it will at least reduce the level of ignorance by a little bit.
No johns
What it means
The common mixup people make is that they confuse this phrase with "Your excuses are not valid." That is NOT what no johns is. No johns is a statement to get someone to stop complaining, whether the complaint is legitimate or not. In other words, it means "Accept your circumstances."
What you shouldn't say
Therefore, it's not legit to say that something isn't a john, it's a real excuse. Maybe it is, but it's still a john. Yes, no johns did originate from a person who used bad excuses, but the definition is not limited to only such.
Sandbagging
What it means
So there are two kinds of sandbagging, and the difference is something I've never seen anyone mention, but it's quite important. The first is what Isai used to be notorious for. He would intentionally play down for no direct purpose other than to lower his level during a match. This definition of sandbagging is equivalent to "going easy on someone."
There is another kind of sandbagging that I know people recognize (because I see youtubers post "It looks like he's sandbagging in this video" on the appropriate matches). But I don't think they realize that it's different. This sandbagging is where you play below your optimal level, but for the purpose of being showy or trying out tactics. Mango is an example of such play. There are some (NOT many as people assume) videos where Mango does not wreck as crazy as he usually does. Now, in a portion of these videos, Mango is actually trying out different tactics or trying to end the match by showing off. This is why he *sometimes* does poorly.
What you shouldn't say
I don't think it's quite accurate to say "Mango/Zhu/whoever else isn't trying hard in this video." These players may lower their level of play in one match, but they do it with the intention of increasing their long term abilities. So they are trying hard, just for something else.
Also, smashers need to be more careful about when they call out a sandbag. I see it used so liberally, as if all pros just want to sandbag all the time. From a rational standpoint, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense for players to sandbag as often as they are accused of. Think about it-these pros are smashing for money. Combine that with the whole innate human psychology of the drive to win (even when there is no reward), social pressure, and a number of other factors, and the result is that it is extremely unlikely that pros sandbag often. So let's not point fingers so much, ok?
tl;dr
No johns applies to all excuses, whether legitimate or not. It just means don't complain about your circumstances.
It's not likely that pros sandbag as much as we accuse them of, so we shouldn't keep hypothesizing that someone was sandbagging just because he did worse than usual. It's more likely that he was just not playing well, or his opponent was playing better, or he was testing out a different style to improve in the long run. There are few explicit reasons for a pro to really sandbag.
so you hate me too?adrian, i tried being ur friend, tried ignoring you, now ur just being a *******. u quit, now gtfo. the next time u enter any tournament of smashers that are present, have fun facing derek 1st round
