Hi-low everyone, and welcome!

I feel like customs are not getting enough love, so this thread is all about competing with your fellow smashers and reporting interesting experiences with customs on.

To put it simply: Sm4sh is not Melee or Brawl, but yes it shares a branch in the Smash Series. This game has a lot to offer because it brought something new to the scene, and it is 'customs'. A lot of people don't play with them, but that shouldn't stop any of us that want to play 'customs' competitively.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rules for battle here are basically 3 Stock, 8 Minutes, Omega Stage Preferred/Legal Stages Accepted, Custom Moves On, Custom Equipment On

Make sure to keep the respect real, just because the battles will get crazy intense doesn't mean your attitude should. :)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Just an example of another competitive game that has a lot of elements in it is the Poke'mon series. They don't ban items or pokemon or moves just because it is not Default. No, they would ban Pokemon because Legendary reasons and that's about it. (Stay out this Smogon.) Also keep in mind you have to go and collect EVERYTHING you want to play with, as in, there is no list you just choose from.)
In sm4sh you have to go and collect the stuff you want to use for custom battle as well. You want to show off your collections and moves right?

Custom Equipment will never catch on, and it's such a stupid idea for competitive competitions that I don't even want to waste my time laying out why it's stupid. I love Customs, more tournaments should run customs, but Custom Equipment is so stupid.

I think Custom Fighter: ON could very well be a viable event for attendees to play with alongside any other usual events.
I am also happy to see that you are making a distinction that Equipment could be used in the event because all the Customs are zany fun that need more attention - I keep hearing about some ridiculous sets and know there are a lot of people who would love to see this stuff on stream.
And, yes, a lot of players have spent a lot of time in the mini-games collecting the Custom Moves and Equipment and would like to show off the fun and exciting sets they come up with. Why alienate potential attendees? As long as there's time for it in an it seems like having a wanted event would only add to a tournament.

Although I hardly got any of the Custom Parts in the game I still feel like I could work with what little I have to make some pretty fun combos and would be interested in how it would work vs others' sets. One potentially problematic situation is having the setup at an event with Customs that can be used as it is very real possibility that very few consoles will have all Custom Moves and Equipment unlocked.

The main issue I think will be hacking. You can download Mii's that have +300 in every stat.

True hacking could be a problem. Nintendo might do something about it. We can also do something about it, just stay alert to who is being dishonest in a battle and not battling them.

I don't see why you had to disregard Smogon like that :c even though VGC(doubles) and Smogon(singles) are completely different things to compare.
Characters have been banned before like Metaknight for being too op.If we were to allow custom items, we would need some type of balancing and considering the many many combinations of items you can hold at the same time and the many different items there are, it would be harder to do so.
Customs would probably go well with stamina maybe since strength increases in knock back wont be as crazy, but again, it seems far too complex of how the rules would work and be far less popular.
That's just my thoughts though.

I know Smogon is a community that loves to play balancer, but I wasn't disregarding in the sense that I dislike them, but rather that I wanted to keep Pokemon as an example for this thread, and keep Competitive Pokemon chatter out of this thread.

I support custom moves, but equipment? Come on.
It sounds like you don't play with them. Actually a large group of people don't even play with them. However, it is still in the game, and there are a bunch of us who want to see what they can actually bring to the game. You can't really see what they bring, if you never play them.

So does anyone want to have a match sometime?

Here's what customs bring to the game: critical hitter, which gives all your attacks a 20% chance of hitting for 3x the damage. Why would you ever want to go up against that? Or even win like that?

Equipment also brings spawning with a home run bat, self healing, and I think there's one that gives you a final smash if you're at a high %.

That sounds fair. If your versing a speed heavy foe, good luck hitting them. If that description was in a pokemon attack, people would run it. Also, if the games get more intense, maybe matches would need 4-6 stocks instead of 2-3. Strategies are strategies, Little Mac has a K.O. punch don't forget.

When you have items off, the home run bat will not spawn in hand. Even if you have the items option set to on with no select items set to spawn. Really could be fixed so that if item spawns are off you could still start with it. Which does only last until dropped or knocked out. Self healing is fun, but it is like 'leftovers'; you really have to milk it if you want to recover like all damage. It's better for recovering from about 2-3 hits to k.o. and those critical hits. Smashball, sometimes you need a finisher. Fun!

Play how you want, man. Ain't nobody gonna keep you down.

Just don't try to bring that junk into the competitive scene and expect not to get shot down, haha.

I could see equipment being allowed in some Friendlies tournaments if equipment with special effects were banned.

Hmm, I think that's actually a very good idea actually. The problem, how do we rule out the equipment that is overpowered/can kill early?

Custom anything won't be in tournaments for quite some time, at least not until enough people have played it and or it gains popularity. Plus, the special effects keep matches from getting stale for watching. They let you have at least 8 different save files for customs, If tournies were ran with custom matches the tourny would have to be catered to a style so that players have enough matches to counter any type-specific match ups that cover another.

Here is an example of a tournament rule-set that would be better for covering customs:
1 Stock, 3-4 Matches, double elimination.

This would give the players more options and time since there is more strategies at hand. Having equipment doesn't make you invincible, they come with some weakness. Some match-ups will have better advantages, but you can bring more than one card to the table (so to speak.)

A solution to ruling out equipment that don't have balanced weakpoints- we play lots of custom battles outside of tournaments (like in this thread) to highlight combinations that work, don't work, are fun, are flawed or ridiculous with advantages.

I'm pretty sure about 4/7 of you here posting are getting along well. I don't see why you don't challenge each other with your agreed preferences, because mostly no one has challenged another yet and this thread could use more reports.
You guys like challenges right?

That's a good way to start it. We just need is a list of all the equipment you can get in the game. Would the equipment that automatically heals you be ruled out?

Here is an accurate list.
Also nothing is ruled out right now. Feel free to get creative and make yourself as challenging as possible! We are here to experiment, have fun, and maybe even learn something.

(As a technical error, anything that gives you items won't work because items are set to off. We only wanted to get random spawning items out of matches not the equipment ones. So you can still use them for stat boosts, but otherwise unless this issue is address and patched, items are a no show.)

You realize how cheap that getting a final smash at high % is? You could be losing the match, but you're Sonic and you get his final smash and beat them. Not fun.

So? Isn't that how most people play it? If getting mad at retrieving the Smashball at a high percentage and K.Oing them isn't fun, then I don't know what to do for you. Most people don't like getting playing at a flat stage either because it gives their character a disadvantage; and some people don't like playing with custom on because they think it's cheap.
