Adapter troubles

Good morning,

I just got my adapter in the mail today, but I'm having trouble setting it up. It came with a disk with some files on it and a readme that's cryptic at best. It reads:

Installation Manual for USB-PSX Cable:

Step

1.Plug-in the Cable into the USB port of your computer and startup the
computer.
Since it is a plug & play device, Win95/98 should find a new hardware.
2.Choose “Select the device driver by yourself” and click “OK”
3.Select “D:\USB” from the box and click “Next”. (Assume D: is the CD-
ROM drive)
4.”Monster.inf” should appear in the list, please select it and click “OK”.
5.Select “Monster Gamepad” from the list and click “Next”.
6.Computer will access the CD-ROM drive and may ask you to insert the
win95/98 CD-ROM.
7.Click ”Next” and wait for the computer to finish the job.
8.Go into the “Control Panel” and select the “Joystick” icon.
9.Select and add “Monster Game Pad” into the list.

End

I'm pretty awful with computers, so that certainly doesn't help.

When I plug it in, I get the popup that says "detects new hardware", but I don't know what they're referring to in step 2.

I would really appreciate it if someone could point me towards a more comprehensive guide or walk me through it.

Thank you very much, and I hope to be able to play with you soon!

When you plug in the adapter you should get a pop up that says "Found new hardware" and it asks if you want to search for drivers on the internet or not and you say no and then you go on to specify where the drivers are after you choose "have disc" you direct it here "D:\USB" and like it says assuming your CD drive is the letter D

The following are self explanatory

"4.”Monster.inf” should appear in the list, please select it and click “OK”.
After specifying the drive and the directory that file should show up

5.Select “Monster Gamepad” from the list and click “Next”.
I do not know where this is coming from but it's most likely when you go to "Add Hardware" on the control panel
6.Computer will access the CD-ROM drive and may ask you to insert the
win95/98 CD-ROM.
Not sure why it says windows 95 or 98 O_o
7.Click ”Next” and wait for the computer to finish the job.
8.Go into the “Control Panel” and select the “Joystick” icon.
Gamepad/Joy icon
9.Select and add “Monster Game Pad” into the list."

When you end up fixing your adapter issue feel free to play on EGX(69.90.34.245:27888)

(This is all on XP by the way, if that makes any difference)

The problem is that, when I plug it in, it just says, in the bottom right, "Found new hardware: USB device", then "Found new hardware: USB human interface device", and finally "Found new hardware: Your new hardware is installed and ready to use". Never does it ask me if I want to search for drivers.

What I've tried is going to Device Manager -> USB human interface device (there are two of these that look identical. I've tried this with both) -> Driver -> Update driver. Then it asks me if I want to "Install the software automatically (Recommended)", which leads to an unending search, or "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)"

After choosing the latter and clicking "next", I'm asked if I want to "Search for the best driver in these locations: Removable media, Include <directory that has monster.inf in it>", which leads to an unending search, or "Don't search, I will chose the driver to install". After selecting that, I clicked on "Have disk..." and I browse -> select monster.inf and click ok. It tells me that "The specified location does not contain information about your hardware".

I'm not sure what else to do really.

Add Hardware's search doesn't find anything, and asks me if I already connected the hardware to my computer. I say yes, and it gives me a list, but nowhere on that list to I see "Monster Gamepad". I do see "USB Human interface device" (x2). If I select it, it says "This device is working properly.", and I don't get any other options. I don't know what else to try, given my limited knowledge of all this black magic that is computers. =/

I've already gone on the servers and I've tried P2P successfully with Siglemic, but I'd much rather not have to put in the time to learn how to play with a keyboard. I'm intending to go on the servers as soon as I can with a controller.

Thanks for taking the time to respond Dair.

Try going to control panel -> game controllers. Your controller should show up there, mine showed up as a "4 axis 16 button joystick". Go to configure controller and make sure it's working ok. The first controller I tried gave flashing buttons all over the place even when nothing was being pressed. But I tried a different controller and it worked.

Nothing shows up in game controllers. Moreover, when I clicked on "add", there wasn't even an option for a "4 axis 16 button joystick".

Edit: 2 axis 14 button <noun>, which is what I presume the n64 controller actually is, isn't there either.

My computer has two usb ports, one right next to the other. It turns out that if I plug the adapter into the other port, it works. Go figure.

I got that apparently common "all the buttons are going crazy" bug, but I just tried two other controllers (both official Nintendo ones as was the first one I tried), and one worked. Then I had to configure it a bit under "game controllers" so that the joystick wasn't covered with molasses, and now it's (crude, but) functional! Let the many funs begin.
