Active Gamers Pricing - Melee

So basically, I've been hearing a lot of complaints from the Melee community regarding the pricing for our upcoming national tournament.

Despite the fact that it is 5 dollars cheaper than Genesis with a comparable prize pool and sponsorships being offered, it seems that growth is not something the Melee community is desiring.

I have confirmed attendance from several east coast players for Brawl, yet I can't even confirm northern California to come down for melee.

So we're going to try to make a decision now.

The poll I am posting explains a few options, you all tell me what you want, and I will do what I can to deliver.

Options:

1. 35$ total package. A guaranteed prize pool of 1200 dollars, including teams and singles. No additional sponsorships offered (Except Mango's). There would be an option for a small discount for bringing a setup (Speak to me personally)

2. 50$ total package, leave everything else as it is. Including 2,750 in guaranteed prizes for Melee, and 1 sponsorship deal. There will be a larger discount for bringing a set up (Speak to me personally)

Pick option 1 or 2. that's all I need.

Wow that's trash. Haha, ok.

I guess I'll just post the options on the first post. Please choose either option 1 or 2.

How is it cheaper than Genesis?

Edit- Yeah, only mods can post polls! So g@y!
Genesis was 55 dollars, ours is 50. My bad, I miscalculated the 15$ difference.

Prices shown more clearly here: http://activegamersla.com/index.htm

And I was just made aware there was a price reduction for entering both melee singles and doubles. Otherwise, we charged just as much as genesis.

u should prolly have

10 for singles
10 per player teams

and like a 5-7 dollar venue fee

i mean that seems legit i guess and you'll still make a big profit i guess

but it is a national like you said and i dont know the situation to well so yea haha

Nah, we won't make any type of profit like that unless we do a pot prize.
35$ Total is the best we can do for a 2 day national tournament.
And don't worry about where the money is divvied up between singles, venue, and doubles. It's just a 35$ package total, with guaranteed prizes for both events.

But I'm guessing your vote would go to option #1 then?

The $35 package will mostly likely attract more people, especially the ones that don't expect to win one of the prizes. My vote would have to go to that option.

The discount for the 35$ option would be 5 bucks.

The discount for the 50$ option would be for 10 bucks.

But I would need to agree to the discount personally before anyone brings a set up. I will know exactly who is bringing one and who is getting a discount. I cannot guarantee I will take random set ups at the door as we're not prepared to hand out unlimited discounts.

I've already given discounts out to a few people.

Besides the top few people, I don't know many who are willing to pay more just so that the better people can get a sponsorship and more money to pay out. Option 1 helps my pocket but I think option 2 is better overall for the community. Most people already planned on going to Pat's house and a lot of the melee community are cheap bas****s. You gave about 2 months notice for this national tourny posting it on 8-3, but Pat's house was posted on 7-18 and isn't till November, giving a 4 month notice (and it's cheaper). Tourney play 3 had a 4 month notice also, though it's turnout isn't looking to great just because it's hard to host a national tourny in WA (and WA knows this). Genesis was posted on 12-16 by the king but i was told it had a year(?) notice. Pound 4 has a 6 month notice and history of being good. If you want a truely national tourny like genesis, you're going to have to post many months in advance so people can get money (and i'm sure you know this).

Again, besides the top few in the community (mango, m2k, jman, hbox etc) most don't have the money to get plane tickets/gas money to get down here (norcal) and then also pay $55.

I'm down for option 2 :)

LoL that was the most confusing conclusion I've ever read. You seemed in favor of option 1 the whole time up until the end.

So option 2 for you then.

I understand the point of advanced notice though. You're completely right,a nd I knew this before the announcement. But it was necessary to get moving on this. We couldn't wait much longer. Also, I figured 2 months was enough time for someone to come. It really only takes 1 day to decide if you'll make it or not, people just feel more comfortable with more time.

Obviously the next one will be with much more notice.

haha, yea, after being to the 2 tournies you've had so far, i know that it is well worth $50 in the end, but maybe that's because i won't have travel expenses

EDIT: it was more an "everyone in melee is going to want cheaper because they have no money and there was no notice" rant

I honestly wouldn't mind option 2, except that the first post in your main thread says there's a $3k prize pool for singles and $850 for teams, and in this thread it says $2,750 for Melee.

I agree the logistics (if that's the right word) are comparable to other large tournaments except for the time. time is a big factor but i completely understand having to start soon

$35

i dont really feel bad about being jewish

all us drakes are going to want the cheaper package. the only advantage scrubbier players get from paying more is being able to say 'wow the melee community is so strong. first place got xxx dollars!'
which is a cool thing, but personally, i'd rather have $15.

also can you enter just one event, or is it package only?

frankly, it just sounds like this isn't as "national" as you intended/hoped

a 'national' tournament wouldn't even have the flexibility to change an entry fee 3 weeks before the event, especially to reduce it, given that players traveling from afar generally would have already committed to attendance with a specific prize pot in mind

and given that it seems it will likely be 98% WC as usual, i vote for the cheaper option as well (no point in paying more to play the same players we play at the $5 tournaments)

and norcal wants to go to this as much as they have any other major socal tourney; transportation is just a bigger issue this time around

Option 2 for me. I thought this tourney was a Regional, not a National lol.

i think you could still run a very successful tournament with option 1, saving your guaranteed prizes and sponsorships for the next national tournament, with more notice ahead of time

this isn't my vote yet

Well Pocky, when running an event you have a certain scope for what you choose to accomplish. Our scope was national, and it has worked on every level for Brawl.

You offer sponsorships and prize money, you get the attention of players across the nation. If you gain top player interest, then you gain the interest of the lesser skilled.

The scope was national. So I called it a national tournament.

I think the TO creates the scope, and the community either accepts it or it doesn't. Brawl accepted it and Melee didn't. Obviously with the lowered scope of the Melee event, I couldn't call it a national anymore. So you're right on that. It's quite disappointing to be honest.

But Yeah, it looks like we'll be going with the cheaper price package.
