A thought on Item Switch

So it's no necessarily the items that cause so much strife for people who turn them all off, so much as it is the WAY they happen. And that's mostly in the way they arrive. We already know Item Switch is going to be in, so I take it to make it "Perfect" for everyone, there'd be some options that were new.

-Drop locations: Random / Set.
This would give you either classic Smash style item spawns, or like, three fixed spots a fight. Memorize them, because those will be the only spots items show up.

-Container: On / Off
Obviously, items would or would not spawn in their containers. This removes the complaints about exploding boxes and stuff people jump into.

-Exploding containers: On / Off
Same as above, just getting rid of the randomness further. The former would make items drop one at a time, this could still have like crate with three beam swords.

-Rolling container: On / Off
I'm sure this will have a toggle like the barrel cannon, but you never know.

I think that covers the basics. I don't expect meticulous item editing (because configuring what pokemon come from a pokeball would be dumb...the whole point of the item is for it to summon something random). But still, that's how I figure it could have Items On and no "THAT'S UNFAIR!" shouts.

1. Drop Locations -

First of all, there are already set spawn points. They are randomly chosen from. So having three chosen spawn points, doesn't make it any more random than having anything but 1. Because they will randomly be chosen to a spawn point. Also, items would have to come at timed intervals.

2. Containers -

This is the only thing keeping items out of tournaments. Without explosive containers, we could just turn off the other power items and they could be in tournament play.

Huh. Would you believe I never noticed?

Another idea would be to have an 'item dispenser' which would have a physical presence within the game, it would drop items at set intervals and possibly move around depending on its settings. That way items could drop in diffrent locations, yet not be strictly random.

Then the best strategy would be to camp the dispenser. Especially if you have a way of controlling the opponent. Falco's Laser. DK cargo hold. Kirby's Neutral B. etc.

Well, I personally don't like items, but here's a neat idea.

On the setup screen, there's like a vending machine type thing. Somehow during matches you can earn coins (like in Melee I guess) and you can buy certain items and there could be like a toggle bar with the items that you just bought. Of course everyone knows the rest.

This is such a pointless conversation that's been going on for some time. There is no point whatsoever in having the ability to control item spawn locations. It's completely unnecessary and a waste of a feature.

Most of the problem comes from Bob-Ombs and containers spawning into your attacks, so if Items were given 1-1.5 seconds of spawn unbreakability it would all be fixed. They would be far less random, and still quite fun.

The whole "items" debate does get talked about a lot around here... as far as I'm concerned, it would be nice to see a general Container and/or Exploding Container switch since those things are apparently the only reason every single item is illegal in tournament play in the first place, but until we get some concrete evidence this sort of topic will only lead into disappointment when the game comes out.

An item dispenser would be a bit corny anyway, since everyone could just camp around it and hog all of the items... besides that could end up having some completely random moments of it's own, like dispensing subspace enemies or something.

You misunderstood. I meant BEFORE the match starts, everyone gets a chance to buy items with money that they earned in previous matches. Nothing gets hogged or hoarded. No camping around any dispensers. Nothing like that.

Somehow that sounds like that could be a little broken itself... would the better players earn more of this cash for being better fighters, or would it go to the worse people so they have an extra advantage at the next match? See, you'd either get a case of better players crushing everyone even harder as they earn more and more money, or most likely a constant see-saw of gold since the person who lost before has more items now that he can use to come out on top with!

Not only that, but how would these items be accessed in the first place? Would you have to get capsules that will always have your item in if you open it, or would they appear randomly or at set times, or could you just get them out by just pressing one of the taunt buttons?

True. Good point. I didn't think of it like that. Oh well, it was just an idea anyways....

Well it was a pretty novel idea, I do have to give you that! I recall there being one or two multiplayer games with that kind of option, but however it doesn't sound like it can translate into Brawl that well... perhaps it's more of a co-op shooter kind of thing! :)

Anyway, as far as the Item Switch goes, I'm sure that might have a few chances of being better considering that Special and Tournament modes have gotten some rather impressive fixes already! The developers seem like they are adding more stuff to everything, so having a bit of an extended item switch could be possible too!

I doubt items will ever be legal, even if they can be controlled in such ways as you describe. The point is, that ANY ITEM gives you an advantage if you get it. If an item made you fight worse, what would be the point. If items are spawning on the stage (even is set locations/times, and no exploding items) then whoever the item spawns closer to will get the advantage, and a player getting an advantage from an event that had nothing to do with his own skill is something that should not be in tournaments.

I personally prefer playing with items off in friendlies too. I hate it when I play with someone who demands that items be on, I'm having an intense moment, I'm always 2 steps away from him, dodging, blocking, wavedashing, attacking with near misses, not touching each other for 30 seconds, always on your toes doing your best, inching closer and closer to hitting your opponent each time. Then he runs away because an item appeared on the other side of the stage. Kinda ruins the experience, doesn't it?

Though the option to control exploding containers would be nice, nothing Sakurai can do will ever make items tourney legal. There's nothing he can do about it, there's nothing we can do about it: it's just a fact of life.
