for starters, i have been playing smash since release, and seriously started playing falcon about 2 years ago. i know about all the ATs, and have become somewhat proficient at incorporating them in my game. the person i play against the most plays as marth, and does not play marth to what i feel is his full potential (never dashes, never grabs, never uses aerial attacks, only smashes and tilts and...counters). it is very frustrating because the majority of the time i lose against this person, yet they don't put as much time into trying to be good as i do. i can chaingrab to about 25% and then after that, any combo i try to pull get's the marth counter after the first attack (basically countering every time i set up for a knee). it always ends up that i have the person up to 150+% and end up killing them with a single uair or something. i'm getting really frustrated because i don't know what i'm doing wrong, and the more frustrated i get, the worse i play. i start to lose my sense of spacing and can't land a knee for my life. i have tried to work on my spacing and combos in the training mode (cpu on evade), but it never seems to transfer over to when i'm playing a real person. any advice, anything would be helpful. i'm at the point where i think i may just have to start maining another character.

It is very frustrating to lose against people when you are confident you are more skilled then them. My advice is, keep a clear mindset. if he doesn't grab, never grabs, AND never uses aerials but still wins, then you are obviously broadcasting your movement. Be patient. Don't always think you have to start the attack just because your C.Falcon and are supposed to combo into a knee. Just wait.

Try baiting. If he always counters, then broadcast and aerial. when you don't do it, punish his counter with stomp > knee or really anything you want. If he always forward tilts, dash towards him to bait it, dashdance away then back, jcgrab. You just need a lot more patience I think. Don't be rambo.

run at him then shield right in front of him

he doesnt grab? u're fine. see what he does.

counters? then kick his butt

whiffs a fsmash on ur shield? then kick his butt

when marth is around

68%, uthrow-> knee always works
120%, dthrow-> knee always works

raptor booster is great if u dash dance and raptor boost right when u think hes gonna fsmash or something.

if u think hes going to counter, run at him, empty short hop and just land a bit out of his fsmash range (just in case) then after he whiffs something, grab him uthrow/dthrow or raptor boost or nair or knee

usually, what i think is if u uthrow, he'll counter since hes not going to do aerials, so wait for it to come out then after that, just kick his butt.

edit: for ur spacing, combos, knees or w/e. just play against level 1 comps, dont go in training and put them on evade, it'll build bad habits.

and u should see if u can play other players other than ur marth friend.

u just need to pay more attention to what ur opponent is doing and be more patient. Unfortunately falcon mains have to deal with less skilled ppl beating them all the time unless ur like hella good. U just have to keep trying. Fortunately, against marth u have combos to disorient ur opponent. If the marth is as bad as he sounds u should be able to Dthrow>Nair>stock ****. counter is ********, as falcon u should never fully commit to something if their is even the slightest possibility that it will be punished (falcon gets punished HARD). my advice is to combo the hell out of this marth and get him scared then punish his counter with knee or something worse. Marth is also tough to learn u need to get really good at following his DI, thats how I beat most marths, for the rest of them tho u need to know the exact spacing of all of marths attacks and know how to punish him accordingly

Pretty sure that made what I meant pretty clear. Read when and how they are going to react and use it to manipulate them.

lol agreed!!

10 agrees!!!

but yeah, as far as im concerned, if you are losing to a marth who doesnt ever aerial and you arent following-up fast enough on u hits, to the point where down b is working after a throw, then you dont know/have the ATs down pat as much as you may think (after rereading your post, you may not be as overly confident as i think, so apologies if that's the case). Because falcon isnt as technically inclined as fox or falco, I feel as if falcons ATs are more associated with knowing things like when to run off throws, and how the opponent will move after being hit at certain %'s with certain DIs, and obv having the ability to do the right move in certain spots (in addition, being able to shffl fast regardless of shield/hit lag, or lack thereof).

baiting works real well if you can DD close to him enough to make him fsmash all the time, especially if he doesnt move off the ground (meaning he doesnt space AT ALL)

and I would def suggest watching falcons, who are alil above your level, vs marth matches to see what goes on.

I know someone who does this.

Dash dance in front of them, and when they fsmash, punish. If they're waiting so they can counter, SH in with an empty jump.

Marth has some good moves, but an open-minded player can overcome everything.

you need to dash dance a lot. and focus your entire game on "waiting for him to do something, predicting something he does, and forcing him to do something (e.g. empty short hop shield) "

sounds like you have more tech skill but not the brains.

oh and make sure you time it when he counters so you can falcon punch otherwise you're just a woman.
