A few Yoshi videos

I got some videos of me playing as Yoshi against my brother. It's not the best quality, so sorry about that, but we don't have a capture card or anything. Also, constructive criticism and tips are much appreciated, as I don't get to face many other Yoshi users in my area.

Yeah, I think I messed up in one (or both?) of these, but these things happen, I guess.

you play a very good yoshi. but some general strategies i employ against lucas/ness.

- i like to get up in thier face, relentlessly. that seemed to work for you in the both vids. this rules out most projectiles, watch out for pk fire though.

- i always try to predict their recoveries, back off and just wait for them to come to the ground when you see the lightnin'.

Thanks for the comments, Meta Dude.

Yeah, I usually play an aggressive ground Yoshi, so that seems to work doubly well against Lucas. Also, the fact that Lucas can be chain grabbed helps. Of course, those darn smashes are always something to worry about...

And yeah, Lucas's recovery is pretty tough for me to predict, especially since my brother just learned how to zap jump and magnet pull.

what's zap jump and magnet pull, like advanced lucas techs? when i see them start up pk lightning, i just pull away giving them lots of space, that way there's no way i'm gonna get hit, then just catch him on the fall.

and yeah, the chain grabs were tight.

You mean the chain grab? It only works on certain characters, Lucas being one of them, but I think it might be escapable. I saw a Metaknight in another video escape it. I'm sure it's legitimate, especially since it's limited only to a few characters (Lucas, Metaknight, Squirtle, Ganondorf, and some others I think).

Zap jump and magnet pull are Lucas techs that give Lucas a lot of recovery in addition to PK Thunder. In the second video, my brother uses it at about 2:45 when he does PK Fire and PSI Magnet to get back to the stage.

Overall I liked the Yoshi very much. Just a couple pointers, cause everyone has room for improvement =P

-Work on your grab spacing/pivot grabs. I noticed you were trying to do it several times but did dash grabs instead and thus tumbled into an attack.

-When chaingrabbing, do a throw at the end. It gets them further off the ledge for more egging/whatever other edgeguarding you want to do, plus it does a little more damage if you do it right.

-Against Lucas I like to toss an egg then rush in. The egg keeps them from PK Firing you as you approach, so you don't have to worry about that.

-I know I tell everyone this lol but practice with the eggs =P

Again, nice Yoshi! One of the better ones I've seen out there =)

EDIT: Blah, I always forget something lol.

-Be careful with the dairs. Against a grounded opponent, I try to only use it with a running start, so I land out of hitting range. There isn't quite enough hitstun to be able to follow up with anything or escape when you're right next to them.

Only metaknight, lucas, sonic, ganondorf, falco, and squirtle can be chaingrabbed, though the timing is more forgiving on some of them rather than others.

Thanks for the comments, Yoshinator.

Yeah, I have a hard time with pivot grabs, lol. I taught my brother how to do it with Lucas as well, but I can barely pull it off in a real battle. And I am a little dair happy as well, but I think that might be just leftovers from playing Yoshi in Melee, heh.

Oh, and a general question, does anyone here play with tap jump on? I know I'm in the minority by doing so, but I just hope I'm not playing at a big disadvantage by using tap jump.

Just another day.

He's right. Look on my thread to see the same thing.

If you play with the tap jump on, then it'll gimp some of the options that are useful during the situaations. I play w/o the tap jump and I do better w/o it. I think that most yoshi players don't play with it on either.

It won't necessarily gimp if you have tap to jump on. It just makes a lot of things easier. If you want to do an uair or up b with tap to jump on it's really like doing an up tilt. It just depends on how you play. I really like tap to jump off because I don't really use c stick for my aerials, but I'm trying to slowly learn to deal with having it on. If you have tap to jump on, you can do anything that you would be able to do with it off, and it gives you slightly more options than if you had it off. Sliding egg tosses are definitely easier with it on. :p

Thanks for the help, guys! I'm going to try using tap jump off in some matches in the future to see if it can help me.

BTW, bigman40, I saw a couple of your videos and your egg aim is great. I know I need to work on mine a lot, lol.

the trouble with tapjump is that if you use your up-b in the air, you'll most likely use your second jump as well. So you have to be really careful if you want to use egg throw THEN jump.
