OK, well I have played Brawl casually and wanted to learn to play competitively. In other words, I'd like to get better. I currently main Meta Knight. I also play as Snake sometimes. My second main is Marth. I like to play offensively. I also like sword users. I play with Ike too sometimes. Anyways, I have learned to DI and I've mastered that. I really need to learn some combos, ATs, and ect. I'm new here so if someone could point me into the right direction or give me some tips, that would be nice.

Another possibility is to play Melee or wait for Project M. You'll have the real competitive experience.

Whatever the choice, watching videos of good players can also give you some inspiration and help you "picture" the techniques more easily, and how they are used. Knowing how to wavedash (A technique in Melee, not Brawl) for example (I only play melee, so excuse my innapropriate example) isn't enough. You have to learn what situations warrant using that technique. So yeah, definitely check videos.

Vigilante, if he mentioned that he plays Brawl, please do not bring up Melee as "the real competitive experience." Do you really want both sides to argue even more about this? Especially not on the Brawl boards. Show some respect.

Our opinions merely diverge. I feel melee is more competitive, thus I reccomend it to him. Let's not get into which is better or not or we'll never be done. And I bring up Melee experiences, because this is the game I compete in. I merely assume that what I did to learn in Melee can to some extent be carried on to Brawl. I didn't stray off topic in that I gave the man advice.

Actually, your advice is flawed. He wants to join competitive smash. At this time, Brawl is much easier to get into (requires less tech skill) and has a much larger community (in most areas). Melee being "more" competitive is irrelevant.

S0L3R, it's always good to have new players. In addition to what others have said, I'd recommend you look up videos of the best players of your characters (Mew2King for MK, Ally for Snake, MikeHaze for Marth) and pay close attention to what they do. Not only the choices they make throughout the match, but why they make those choices.
