Compatible Controllers
In an eight-player battle, the following controllers can be used.

○Wii U GamePad (Max 1)
○Wii Remote or Wii Remote Plus* (Max 7)
○Wii U Pro Controller (Max 7)
○Nintendo GameCube controller** (Max 8)
○Nintendo 3DS series system*** (Max 8)

* Includes expansion controllers (such as the Nunchuk or Classic Controller Pro).
** Two GameCube Controller Adapter for Wii U accessories are required to connect eight GameCube controllers (each sold separately)
*** In order to use a Nintendo 3DS as a controller, each Nintendo 3DS system must have Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS.
This means that with a combination of Wii Remote (Classic Controllers), Wii U Pro Controllers, and the Gamepad we're going to be able to do 8 player without any GameCube Adapters or 3DS Systems.

This ALSO means that we'll be able to play with 8 GameCube controllers OR 8 3DS systems.

So many options!

Where did you get the information from?

I don't get it?
The theory was that you'd have to use a GameCube Adapter or a set of 3DS Systems to do 8 player due to the four Wii Remote / Pro Controller limitation. This has been proven wrong.

It's actually much more significant that they confirmed that it does work with 2 Gamecube adapters. You'd need to use 4 USB ports to plug in the adapters, but you can play with 8 Gamecube controllers.

Sooooo, does the 3DS need the 3DS version of Smash to be able to be used as a controller or no?

Updated the thread to be a general information thread instead of a comment about wireless-only connectivity.
