4BR Smash 4 Top 100 Players

Hello 4BR, I'm SmashCapps! You guys have probably seen my articles on the front page and my writing stuff about Smash all over. But enough with introducing myself, I got the honor to try and propose a project here in the 4BR and I don't plan to waste it.

Many people have wanted to see a list similar to MIOM ranking Smash 4 players as it would create hype and give players a goal to aspire to. Some people have said it should just be a top 25 or 50 but I have way more ambition. I want to see a proper top 100 voted on by the 4BR alongside some other invited panelists to be published on Smashboards.

To be a nominated a player must have had serious interaction with the North American Scene. This includes participating in national or major tournaments, competing in regionals, and/or being active in a local scene. As such unfortunately some international talent will not be present on this list. I URGE for this vote to happen AFTER Genesis 3 so we can have as accurate a ranking as possible while including the masses of international talent attending.

I have included the data I have compiled thus far in the post below. It does not have everyone yet so if you see a name missing do not worry. I will be getting these ready so that only Genesis 3 results will need to be added. There will probably be somewhere over 200+ players to vote on. Some will likely be 'culled' after Genesis 3 depending on their performance and other factors simply to make voting a bit easier. I'll be creating a poll to allow the 4BR to vote after studying the results. All I really need from you is to vote on the project and I can take care of publishing and the other hard work. I just want to help do something huge for Smash 4!

Villyness may not be as well known in the states but she holds the distinction of being the first female player to ever win a Smash major: BAM 7. She has not only shown that she can keep up with Australia's best but also that she can keep up with the world placing 13th at S4W. At the time of writing she is ranked #4 on the Victoria Power Rankings.

Nikes is potentially the best Smash 4 Yoshi player in Australia. While he had a lackluster performance at BAM 7 he was able to go toe to toe with Ghostbone at SXC2K15 where Ghostbone was sent to Genesis 3. [EDIT IN GHOSTBONE RESULTS AT G3 TO COMPARE SKILL LEVELS]. At the time of writing he is ranked #2 in the South Australia Power Rankings.

Alphicans is by far the best Little Mac main in Canada and arguably one of the best in the world. While not often traveling outside of Canada he has shown strong placements and is among the best in his region being power ranked #1 in Alberta at the time of writing.

One of the most successful Mii mains, Dapuffster is widely considered the best Mii Brawler main in the world despite not entering many events. His participation at majors has been hindered by the legality of Mii's special moves. While only attending a few majors he has still made a serious impact on the scene.

Currently among the best Lucario mains, Kamicario had his breakout performance at CEO 2015 placing high with a relatively unseen character. He then went on to pull out a strong placing at Low Tier City 3 against some of Texas's greats all using the 'Wiichuck' controller.

One of few strong King Dedede mains in North America, Big D has brought home high placements both locally being the ranked #1 in the British Columbia Power Rankings, but also brought in high placings at majors. With Mario as a backup for his worse matchups, Big D is ready for anything.

Answered my own question about more players being added based on data by learning2read X_x. (IE I notice a lack of midwest players outside of a small number). I guess this is heavily pulled from smashboards data for the time being?

Mostly got the ideas of who to look up via power rankings in their states, looking at results for majors to see if there were folks I didn't recognize, etc. A lot of these small regions (and a large chunk of midwest) unfortunately have either not traveled or barely even made it out of pools at bigger events. Some haven't kept their results ANYWHERE either which has made tracking them down searching through youtube and twitter feeds. ._. I have a few more people from there but tbh most probably wouldn't make a top 200 votes with their very limited results

There's always the potential for more to get in after G3 as well if they simply shown a surprising good performance though. I hope some of those folks get out and travel.

Since you mentioned lack of data from midwest, Ohio just updated their PR a couple days ago, and I just literally put the updated PR for my region in that thread last night. (BoScotty is super awesome at drawing <3). If you need help scavenging data, I know a good amount of people in the midwestern states so I can try to unearth some stuff for you.

For example, my region's results mainly come from a bi weekly and occasional events in Eastern Ohio since those are the most logical events to make travel wise) As for Ohio: Youngstown, Akron, Cleveland, and Columbus are major hubs for events.

It's not that there is totally lack of data for the regions themselves, it's more how they fare against some of the top talent in other places. Like I went to look into Wisconsin, and with 100s of players already on this list that have traveled to other places, fought top players, and at least have a top 32 placement on some large scale level, saying any of their players who've never really made a solid placement in even Chicago should be in the running for a top 100 player list makes little sense. Some regions simply are quite weak compared to others that have 10 players who dent national tournaments on a semi-regular basis and that's got to be considered. As much as it sucks a lot of the Midwest doesn't compare to other region's talent.

I should probably also mention here just because a name is here on the list now doesn't mean it'll be there for voting. Some people like GimR, Logic, Techei, and Pink Fresh as good examples while solid players, if they lack a significant showing at Genesis 3 are ranked so far low in their regions they probably aren't worth consider for a top 100 when some of the best in other regions can be on the list. (Some players are on this current list simply in case they do good at G3 to save me time).

In the exact opposite, if a player manages to do very well unexpectedly at G3 they may also be added onto the list. Ex: if Midwest players made some solid placements. I'm thinking likely top 64 levels with the talent we have there is honestly a noticeable achievement which says wonders for how stacked the event is.

I'm not against hunting down more players in certain regions (and the list still needs some others I haven't gotten to touch on yet since it's a lot to gather), but I spose don't be surprised if they don't make it or get 'culled' to make voting easier if that makes sense.

I believe we should strive to have a top 25 before Genesis 3 to build hype and see if we can pull this off accurately on a smaller scale. I also intend to do a European top 25 after BEAST 6, so I can live with this being based around NA.

I see no reason to put out a subpar list before G3 that is incredibly likely to change right after. It's confusing, time consuming, and doesn't do much to honestly add to hype as it becomes obsolete in a matter of weeks. I'd rather see a full rolled out list that's really high quality.

Realistically we're not gonna have a top 100 that soon after Genesis and the top 25 being subject to change makes it pretty interesting to see both times around IMO. The overlap with the Genesis seeding is probably fairly large, but as a collective we might have a different opinion, it might not have all the same players due to not everyone attending and one event is still just one event. I'm not gonna push too hard for having a top 25 before it as there is plenty to do, but I don't see any major drawbacks to that test run of sorts.

Okay, I got some sad but realistic news on this. After seeing people basically crazy outrages over trying to nail down a top 32 at Genesis 3, I don't think if this list is released now it will do any good. Instead it'd end up just getting people mad and folks dismissing it so future lists hold less impact. It makes little sense to continue on with such a project when it would just hurt in the end.

HOWEVER.

I'm hoping to use this after Genesis 3 and still make some good from it, potentially making a mini database for commentators so they can quickly find top threats at majors as well as general skill gaps of players to help people with seeding going into 2016. Then come September 2016 for planning reasons, the list can full out get ready for votes and release in 2016.

Hopefully this is cool to everyone, let me know if you have any ideas, think we should try to barrel out a top 5, or somethin like that.

I'm actually in full agreement. I don't think a top 100 list is bad, but it should wait at least another year. Melee's been out for a long time for that list to take affect, and it is still far from perfect imo.

Man, that's certainly a good point Capps. What a tricky situation.

It's frustrating because a lot of our projects seem to hit speed bumps from the public before we've really even done anything. The timing of the Genesis seeding effected this, and the release of patches and DLC convoluted our tier list process.

I'd like to get more opinions on this. I strongly agree that the database should at least be in full effect, regardless of if it goes public. It's very insightful for the scene, even if it's mostly kept indoors. The results from Genesis 3 will be crucial for this list as well, and I'm sure this backlash will die down pretty easily. The list shouldn't serve as a definitive, which perhaps can be stressed as to not warrant people jumping to conclusions, but rather as an analysis grounded in many factors.

The Genesis 3 thing was mostly controversial because there is no established top X for either Smash game where you can say that the lower end is significantly better than the best people not making the cut. Not to mention you stack the odds against non-top players by giving the top players both favourable seeding and a free pass for the early rounds, protecting them against upsets and demanding less of their stamina. Note that I'm not against a pro bracket of sorts, but only if there is some sort of qualifier system where people have to work for it. It still won't be perfect due to some regions being less stacked than others, but at least in that scenario there's a basis to the points everyone is aware of upfront.

There is however not much wrong with ranking players with nothing particular at stake. It's content that generates attention and highlights various players that not everyone might know, which is very positive for a scene on the rise like Sm4sh. We are also in a position where we would probably do a better job than most outside parties who will no doubt attempt it at some point.

My main problem with lists like the MIOM one is that 100 players globally is impossible due to the low interaction between scenes. I loathe the treatment of Europeans in their lists: it basically went from none at all to a few incredibly arbitrary placings with a gap of 10+ placements inbetween where there should be only small differences. It's just too ambitious and hard to take seriously from that minority perspective.

I still feel like the 4BR could try for a test run of a NA top 25 over 2015 and see how that goes. Many placements won't be too difficult and we won't bite off more than we can chew. It should only include foreign players who competed in the States (Mr-R, Abadango etc.), so we can point to actual placings and matchups in tournament reality.
