If you look at the screenshoton the newest update you see the names that are listed are Bill, John, Tom, Mike, and Mick
what do these names have in common?
THEY ARE ALL 4 LETTERS MAX!!1!

i dont think this is gonna change gameplay much, but theres gonna be alot of people who play brawl online and it seems like we might need longer screennames

It is deffinantly a four characters max again.
not only did he only show names with four characters, he only had enough room for four characters.
I strongly doubt that he would make the names scroll across, because he deffinatly had enough room to expand the size.
He just chose not to.

sorry this is kinda off topic but i was just wondering

in melee some characters (namely ganondorf- 9 letters) had their whole name spelled across, but your name could only be 4 letters

what gives?

In melee the tags were above your name....9 letters above your name would be mighty distracting...
They might actually do something about it this time, but not by the screenshot we were given.

in japanese, people use characters, usually names are like 2-4 characters long, I've never seen a 5 character name before, there's ones where it's just 1 character long too.

but for English, that's not the case, and it's probably a pain to program all that, either that or it's just a bit useless, since who really needs more than 4 letters to identfy among 4 ppl fighting on a stage? it's really just for the watchers.

That is a great point.
For some reaseon I always thought it was just another small thing they added.
But they would have had to have known it would be played well and have videos on the internet.
I consider it to be a way to portray your style, not your name.
I only user my tag as my melee name because my tag....is my style.
But now the deffinantly know it's going big.

I don'tthink more than four letters is neccesary.
What can you do with four letters?
A good section of a name.
Initials.
A move(GimpyFish.)
A lot.
You can do anything with 4 characters... It's just a matter of caring.

4 letters is fine for me. (WHO?)
Still 5 letters would open up a lot more possibilities.
Oh well.

There are 26x26x26x26 things you can do, with only lowercase english letters, you will never have someone with the same name as you if you try not to, and remember, he said you have a name AND the character will have a name, he is tom with samas named John...

That would be 456976 possibilities... I don't think people should be complaining about too few available letter.
That would be multiplied by two for uppercase and there's numbers and japanese letters, and it can be 3 letters only if nessecary.
There are next to infinite possibilities.

Me too, I don't see why people have to get all greedy, I mean, c'mon... Does it really matter?

But yeah, I totally see myself having 15 names for different characters.

Can't they do at least five? I hate using KEGE and I don't like spelling out Billychu in japanese.

I personally like the 4 letter system just because if it were longer, it would be annoying mid-game and would affect gameplay a lot. Especially online if you have some n00b with a 10 character name...

Names could go where it says the character's name in the damage meter, so it's not really a problem of length.

No, you don't name your character.
John was his name, before he was going to change it to Tom.
He didn't change Samus's name to John...

And I'm fine with just Pir.

(3 letters FTW!)

People are too greedy these days. Four letters is fine. And so what if you can't spell your whole name out. Don't use name tags if you "Hate" is that much.

And I'm betting that online play will use some different form of identification than name tags.
