Smash 3DS 3DS Controls - Tilting and Smashing

Hi All,

I've been a long time lurker on these forums, but this is my first post. I should preface this by saying I'm not in any way a competitive player.

Anyway, I've been having a blast with SSB4 thus far, but have had issues performing tilts. I often accidentally input smash attacks instead, which in a high stakes game against friends has proven disastrous more than once. I can reliably enter tilts in training mode, but in the heat of battle I just lose control and accidentally smash everything! I'm sure practice will help, but I'm curious if anyone here has simliar issues?

Thanks!

First off good first post. Welcome.

It takes a bit of practice but eventually it gets easier to input tilts. Surprisingly the analog stick is pretty sensitive. I know that turning off Tap Jump helped me in this game. At least with Up Tilts. Maybe it'll do the same for you. Once again the best thing is just practice against cpus and friends. Eventually they'll naturally come out instead of being forced.

Good luck. Hope you get them down.

Hey, thanks for the reply! That is encouraging. Turning off tap jumps helped me a lot with Up Tilts as well, but I still struggle with the timing on forward, backward tilts. I have a follow up question:

As far as I can tell there are two ways to execute a tilt. One, move the circle pad (all the way) before pushing the attack button. When I hit them simultaneously, I smash, when I hit attack after I move the pad, I tilt. Two, move the circle pad (barely) simultaneously as I push the attack button. The second way theoretically seems best to me in a fight, but is WAY harder to execute.

Which method do the experienced players here think is superior? If I'm going to be putting in time practicing I don't want to give myself a bad habbit learning an inferior method! I guess my question is should I be focusing on thumb control or timing?

The second method is what I see people around my area use the most. Its tougher yeah but probably the best way to do it. Just my opinion. I'm sure others will give their input haha.

I highly recommend turning off tap jump. I have had to do this to force myself to use the jump button since it gives me better jump control.

It is important to get a good feel for you button layout that fits you. Feel free to mess with the control set up to your liking but i warn you the ui for it is pretty bad.

Tilts, the best way to preform them i found is to break smash movement and tilts movement into two motions-- gently pushing the stick and hitting attack will generate a tilt. Taping the stick quickly and holding the attack button will make my character use a smash move. Try it like that and see if that method works.

For whatever bizarre reason, I'm finding it easier to do tilts with the 3DS than with the GC pad, even with tap jump on. I suspect I'm in a pretty small minority in this.

I find the effort of actually achieving a perfectly timed tilt that's used for good use in battle way too tedious for the 3DS honestly,
too much effort for low results, unless you really feel tilts will help your combo or whatnot then go for it, But me personally i'm leaving out tilts completely here.

I have zero problems with the controls on the 3DS. I was never a hardcore gamecube player, though. Obviously, with Melee, I always used it, but with Brawl I always mixed it up and played with every control method (GameCube controller, Wii Remote, Wii Remote & Nunchuk, Classic Controller, Classic Controller Pro) and I actually got to be good with all of them, except not so much for the Wii Remote by itself, but what do you expect when playing Smash without a joystick?

That being said, I have no problem doing tilts. I don't know how to explain how I do it, as I just do it intuitively without having to think about it.

And, also, I always turn tap jump off. Because, to quote the nerd:
"Having the ****ing up button jump is ****ing ****ed up."

Considering I never used the Gamecube controller in Brawl, the controls for titling and smashing have never bothered me on the 3DS. Honestly, I'm having zero problems with the controls which is great, making me wonder why so many people are having such a difficult time with them or just flat out hate them. To each they're own I suppose but I rather enjoy the controls for Smash Bros. 3DS. That being said, I would prefer an actual controller over the 3DS's controls but I'm survive :p

I never used the GC controller either so I honestly don't understand the hate for the controls on the 3DS. That being said I am playing with a grip on my 3DS which makes it feel like a controller and it's amazing.

Yeah so am I. I ordered one from eBay two weeks ago and it has helped IMMENSELY with my comfort level in terms of holding my 3DS XL for long periods of time. The Smash Bros. 3DS special demo gave me a good idea of how my hands would fair with the game if I was going to continue to play with my 3DS XL without some sort of grip to make things bearable.

I've been thinking of snagging a controller grip as well, what brand do you guys use? I don't get cramps when I play, per-se, but my hands do get fatigued.

Also, with a few hours of practice I can now tilt whenever I want, I just have to think about it. Hopefully the jump to unconcious input comes soon! Thanks for the advice guys.
