Well, nobody seems to have mentioned this yet and I think it's worth discussing:
So, it is the year 2015 and we now have the mods 20XX and the Melee Netplay Community Build which in my view contribute immensely to the Melee metagame. In particular, the new stages give some much needed variety to tournaments and make the game more exciting to watch and play. In my view, having more than two legal stages with bright graphics makes the game friendlier to experience as a viewer- in particular the scenery in the new Green Greens and Snag the Trophies stages are beautiful and better to watch than the dark pit of Battlefield.
So, my question is this: Will we get to a point in the next 1-3 years where 20XX or the MNCB become the standard setup for major tournaments?
On one side like I have stated already, I think the new stages do add a lot to the game, especially when Sm4sh already has Omega stages and bright surroundings (plus Smashville) are a lot more visually appealing than the dark Melee stages. Plus, new platform setups in these stages give a wider variety of strategies on them. As Melee discs become rarer and more valuable and as the Wii becomes the preferred console for Melee, I think the time is right for majors such as Evo and The Big House to make the switch. Already, I play most of my Melee on Dolphin and most of the Wiis at my college are running 20XX. It seems apparent that we won't be getting Melee HD for years, if ever. In my view, the game has been out fourteen years and technology has improved; it's time to make the switch.
On the other hand, I could still see a few reasons why some would oppose this change. Not everyone has a Wii or the motivation to switch to these mods, and some could be salty playing on stages they don't recognize. More importantly, Nintendo might not look on the whole thing amicably and try to ban streaming as they did with Project M. Frankly I think they couldn't care less about Melee at this point but I'm not Nintendo either.
Overall, I think the benefits of making 20XX or MNCB the tournament standard far outweigh the drawbacks. The Wii is now dirt cheap and the advent of Dolphin makes this move more feasible than ever. What do the esteemed members of the Melee community think of this question?
