2014 : The Year of Super Smash Bros.?

Probably.

Here are the reasons why :

- SSB4 coming this year (as announced during the first trailer)
- 15th Anniversary of the Smash Bros.' series (January 21st, 1999)
- Also 125th Anniversary of Nintendo (founded in September 23rd, 1889)

If this event happens, what do you expect Nintendo would do for this occasion ?

As for me :

- Special SSB4 Wii U and 3DS XL bundles.
- A Symphonic OST, containing orchestral medleys of Nintendo series represented in all the SSB games, including the newest.
- AR Cards for the 3DS, and NFC Figures/Trophies for Wii U.
- Concerts.
- Artworks like the Official Website ones, as posters, and made by various artists.

On a side note, Harmony of a Hunter makers will also release a SSB-Tribute Album this year, called Harmony of Heroes.

What for you ?

We do also have Sakurai's New Year's Resolution:

Key phrase: Completion

Resolution: I resolve to complete development on Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U and release it in 2014.

From Sakurai's wording, it seems it will be released very late in the year though.
Like "I will complete the game just in time for 2015".
Still OK with it.

I find it silly that people are dead set on that. I personally find that Nintendo can't afford to wait that long for Smash 4 to come out.

I see it coming out much sooner.

I'm predicting that it will be released internationally on Nintendo's founding date.

But it's also the Year of Rosalina.

Hmm. I wonder if we’re getting a character reveal on January 21st, or some other kind of significant reveal. If you think about it, not much has been revealed regarding game modes. It would be nice to see something brand-new besides stages, characters, and items.

I'm sorry to be a killjoy (as I suppose it may be a joke), but I'll make some statements :

It's hardly possible to be the Year of Rosalina :
Super Mario Galaxy was released 6 years ago, in November 1st, 2007.

It's both too soon and not really appropriate for the time being.

It's the same case for Yoshi.
Super Mario World, the first game in which he appears, was realeased 23 years ago in November 21st, 1990.

It would be stupid from Nintendo to celebrate an anniversary which doesn't end by a 5 or a 0.
It would look too random.

Have you seen this Smash Bros. veteran? If you have any idea where he's at, please contact the Smash Bros. facility as soon as possible.

When is New Island going to be released anyway? Yoshi's Yarn is probably too far away to be the game released on the date of his announcement.

2014 is the year of Waluigi. He has been around now for 14 years and it is the natural follow-up to the year of Luigi.

Waluigi confirmed for Smash 4.

It was a joke. Though she definitely appears to be an Ascended Extra with not only 3D World but Super Freaking Smash Bros.

Anyone else feel like Yarn Yoshi is gonna be one of those games that never sees the light of day ....?

I mean, We got our first look of Super Mario 3D World at E3 of 2013, and got it in November ....
So if we do get it, it'll probably be vastly different from what it was first shown to be.

this sounds like an interesting idea but all i see coming from nintendo is maybe a wii u / 3ds bundle or something; artwork would be nice too though, maybe another midnight release

The idea of a year dedicated to Smash Bros. sound wonky to me. In that case, why not just make it a Year of Nintendo? Year of Luigi brought us all sorts of games centered around Luigi. Smash Bros. is only getting one new installment by this year.

Year of Yoshi seems plausible.

As for games that may never see the light of day, I certainly hope this isn't the case in SMTxFE.

My theory is that Yoshi (like Bowser) is one of the few veterans that is receiving a massive overhaul and simply hasn't been ready to be released to the public yet.

Oh and to stay on topic this definitely won't be the year of Smash Bros. If you want to know what the year of Smash looks like, check out everything Melee accomplished last year: http://smashboards.com/threads/melee-in-2013-year-in-review.344985/#post-16156722 Not bad for a game over 12 years old. It's gonna be a good year for Smash fans for sure though.

I'm personally a thousand times more excited for a new Smash than seeing a Smash game I've played for 12 years show up at tournaments and what not.

Nintendo probably won't announce it officially as the year of Smash, but every year a new Smash releases become landmark years to me.

It's obvious it's fake.

Supposed Sakurai said:
“Could you imagine the person who makes Madden or the person who makes Call of Duty trying to create a new Smash Bros.? I laugh at that prospect. Those people live in America where they think they’re being recorded by the government. Big deal, I know I’m being recorded by five separate cameras from 10 A.M. to 6 P.M. I’m also fairly confident my house is bugged, but I don’t care because I have nothing to hide.”
Why does Sakurai care about Madden or CoD? And why is he telling a random interviewer his house is bugged?

Supposed Sakurai said:
“People keep complaining that they want the game to be more like Melee,” continued Sakurai, “Some people made a modification of Brawl and now think that they’re better than me. I dare them to say that to my face. I’ll have a real brawl with them and show them that their little mod means nothing in the grand scheme of things. All they can do is make one of my games more like one of my other games. And when my new game comes out, everyone will stop playing their little project and play with a real game.”
Something tells me the author has bias against Project M. Look at all of the inconsistencies:

1. They think they're better then me.
2. Say that to my face.
3. Little mod means nothing.
4. MY game.
5. Stop playing their little project.
6. Play with a real game.

This guy's just being a total a$$, and I-

.
Yoshi wasn't revealed until a year after brawl's announcement, and he didn't receive any big changes then.
Who knows, maybe that's not the case this time.

Eh, I wouldn't miss him if he ended up not being in the game at all, honestly.

During the 125th anniversary for Nintendo, Sakurai could reveal us a Hanafuda character, who would be one of the last newcomers revealed for SSB4.
As for Jan 21., He could simply reveal the new design of the Smash Ball.

Yes, P4R is satire, and one of the best things to come out of it are people who take their articles seriously.

"Don’t even get me started on the fans,” warned Sakurai, “Smash Bros. fans are the most insane, overzealous people you will ever meet in your life. I don’t care for them, yet I will still make the best game possible because if I don’t, I will have let myself down. I don’t make this game for anyone but myself."

I find it amazing how close to what he's actually thinking this probably is.

Negative Nancy is at it again
...Excuse me? That wasn't being negative. That was nothing more than an opinion and a statement.

If Yoshi didn't make it, I wouldn't miss him. Do I want him gone? No. Will I be mad if it is? No.

Simple as that. That isn't negative.

Yoshi is cool, and pretty fun in Brawl too, but I kind of dread his reveal since it'd be so... boring. I mean, I'm not expecting anything new from him, we all know that he's in, and we all know what he's pretty much going to look like too.

I wish that like with Bowser, Yoshi gets some posture improvements himself.
