Is it because of every single DLC character in Ultimate except Banjo-Kazooie having gimmicks?

I'm fine with a gimmick character if it fits the series though. In the current case it does.

I don't care about accurately representing a series - if a character acts as they should and do moves they could use in canon (even if they haven't), that's good enough. Making a good fighter is top priority.

Just because a character has a gimmick doesn't mean they can't be a good fighter though. It's only if the gimmick is executed badly. There can be plenty of good gimmicks as well. Not like everything has to be exclusively catered to a competitive standpoint.

True - however, there is just as much merit to gimmickless characters. The problem in this case is not Sami, but the thread as a whole. Infinite has clearly been prioritising gimmicks (such as with Barista's timed hits which were enforced despite no prior vote being held) and many of us just want to design a standard character.

When talking about stages or modes that is true. When talking about characters, that is one of the most ridiculous Smash-related sentences I've ever read. In casual play, characters are just a list of powers and maybe some distinguishing stats. In competitive play, your whole playstyle revolves around your characters. It is of the utmost importance that characters be designed for competitive play as well as, if not more so than, casual - otherwise you get Hero or Min Min.

I don't think we should represent a series worse than we could've just because of completely unrelated characters we've added in the past.

I don't think designing for competitive matters much considering none of us are even playing the game to begin with.

Well I don't think we should homogenise the movesets of newcomers just for "game accuracy"

We're immersing outselves in a fictional world - and if I was in that fictional world, I'd want to cater to competitive play.

Gimmick movesets are the exact opposite of homogenizing them though. If anything non gimmick movesets are the more homogenizing ones.

I mean "homogenise" in the context of a half-and-half, either you've got a gimmick or you haven't.

Anyway, most of these gimmick characters have been some sort of summoner.
