Blame the ****ty school system, not Americans in general. The curriculum is always "hey guys okay so we're gonna start with Colombus which will be full of inaccuracies about who he was and what he did, and then we'll read through all the way to present day" but you never get past the Civil War. And even if you did it's all focused on short-term memorization for tests so after three months of summer break you forget literally everything.
