I beg to differ on this take.
I actually really like the environments in Colors, they were vibrant and fun while also being very creative. But LW and Forces are so bland and generic and just really, really boring most of the time. I'll always prefer environments like Kingdom Valley, Crisis City, and Aquatic Base (the last of which was probably one of my favorite Soinc environments, not for gameplay of course but visuals, music, and overall aesthetic.) The reason I love Sonic levels is that they're fantastical and fun while still being grounded in reality-that's been Sonic's whole thing since Sonic 1. Compare that to LW, which has pretty much just the same worlds from NSMB, regurgitated with a Sonic coat of paint. Don't get me wrong, they are beautiful, but extremely uncreative. Likewise, Forces just has Green Hill seven times, a couple of Chemical Plants to round it out, a boring city without a name, "Eggman's base" (easily his most boring in the series yet), and the white and green city that is the only environment that I found interesting.
And the story...well, sorrry, but Sonic is allowed to have narratives. And they're allowed to tell stories that aren't all sunshine and rainbows. While I can't speak for Sonic's story (It really is utter doodoo garbage), Shadow's brings a satisfying conclusion to his character arc. And Silver is now my favorite Sonic character, mainly due to how well he was written in this game. It's okay if a Sonic game has a plot with dark-ish tone. Sonic was born out of wanting to be edgier than the rest of the crowd, but now he feels just as safe as Mario-and even Mario fought a realistic Dark Souls dragon three years ago, while Sonic was going through a very safe and unsubstantial narrative that used his younger self as nothing but a crutch to get Mania fans to buy Forces.
I'm not saying you should enjoy 06, or that it's good. But I will take it's environments any day over the New Super Mario Bros levels or Green Hill number four hundred and three. Same goes for the story, Lost World easily has the worst in the series with Forces following close behind. 06 sure, is a bit dark compared to those games, but what's beneath is better characterization and storytelling than LW or Forces could dream of having.
