Long story short, their parent company G/O Media has been laying off many employees for questionable reasons.
Anime fans didn't respect Kotaku for their articles, but after G/O Media bought them in recent years, the latter steadily threw the baby out with the bathwater, so to speak. Kotaku's website design is a bit of a mess now, and their last remaining video producer got fired yesterday.
