A couple of related fun facts:

Plastic was invented in 1907. Within 115 years, humanity has created 8.3 billion tonnes of plastic, of which approximately 6.3 billion tonnes is waste. Plastic is notable for, as you mentioned in the form of microplastics, being able to break down into such small parts that it can enter your bloodstream, and even enter the brain via the cardiovascular system.

A study was recently done to test the effect of plastic in the human body, though the study was unable to be completed due to the lack of a non-afflicted control group to test on - that is to say, scientists physically couldn't find a person who didn't have some quantities of plastic in their bodies.

Notably, this means that studies in relation to the effects of plastic on the human body have been difficult, but have been commonly associated with falling fertility rates and a steady decrease in average IQ, as well as the increase in chemical imbalances in the body that cause mental disorders such as depression. However, none of this can be exactly proven using the scientific method because there isn't a control group.
