i had this trouble with all l-cancelling with mario. Just try to l-cancel as late as possible, because you might whiff, hit an opponent, or hit a shield, and need to time your l-cancel accordingly.

run up, spot dodge, begin sick combo.

to start, i would suggest marth or sheik as they give you good fundamentals, but after that fox, falco, or peach are three that are AMAZINGLY GOOD but VERY hard to play.
