The same thing happens to me a lot. From my experience if you press backwards before you use Aura Sphere in the air it turns you around without changing your momentum, but if you press backwards right after you activate Aura Sphere your momentum should change, as long as your moving anyway...

I B-stick sometimes. Or if i'm not B-sticking, i jump backwards activate Aura Sphere than immediately press the control stick in the direction i'm not facing and get a similar effect
