Your suggestion is far more original than anything I was able to come up with! The only idea that came to mind for me was having the duo appear on stage via one of Jamjars' silos from Banjo-Tooie.

I'm going to have to go with Snake on this one. His addition onto the roster not only threw everyone for six, but also opened the door for the likes of Sonic, Mega Man and Cloud. I've never forgotten Snake's reveal trailer either.
