What does the Fox do? - Advanced Guide to Fox (Update v8 - New Video!)

What does the Fox do? - Advanced Guide to Fox (Update v8 - New Video!)

It's nice, very detailed, but some of the information is off, mainly from throws, and his aerials, the MU information is also a little off, but only for lightweights like kirby.
This guide was in depth but not to complicated, along with a section foir matchups. Perfect for the aspiring fox main.
D
This really helped me out, especially with all the techniques you need to use.
Seems casual based or low level game play. You should also note that f-tilt jab-locks.
Quality aside, i am a greening main and i'm insulted at how much you left out about him considering you have the source of all things greninja at your finger tips but hey, i guess that just means you guys are gonna notice my shadow sneak, bubbling, spike moves, shff tech and so on by yourselves =u=
One of the best guides I have ever seen! I like to play Fox in every Smash Bros game and atm I often pick him in Smash 4 so thats very useful to read.

Thank you, hope it helps with your gameplay!
wow.. this is THE most complete guide, as well as the most neatly organized guide I've ever seen on smashboards. I wish there were more like it.

Glad you liked it :)
A splendid guide to playing as Fox if ever I've seen one! Granted there were a few (extremely minor) things left out in terms of combos, but aside from that, there's really nothing bad I can say about this review. It was informative, kept me reading into it out of sheer interest, and covered Fox's major strengths and his possibilities surprisingly well! Kudos!
Amazing guide 4 stars for the data.
I love how you explained matchups and so.
You're only missing that one star for sleeping on the greatest anti air in the game fox nair. Besides that amazing guide.
Deserves 5/5 for the data and tips.
Kill move kill percents were very helpful, being easily viewed.

Thanks for the review :)
This guide was amazing! The amount of information is astonishing, the accuracy is almost impeccable, and the mind games section especially was really good to see. My only complaint (and this is more of a nitpick) is how you called Jigglypuff's attacks by incorrect names. Yes, you read correctly. My ONLY complaint is that you used the wrong names for a couple moves. Overall, I found this guide very helpful and I will be applying the trap player tactics to my current, mostly switching between offensive and defensive styles, running in for a combo string, then running to the other side and shooting lasers, waiting for an approach, and punishing accordingly. One thing I would like to see in terms of information other than the rest of the character match ups is frame data. I can't tell you how many times I've reacted just a split second too late to reflect a projectile, and I can't find frame data for fox that isn't an enormous chart with random numbers that I have to scroll to the top to understand. Anyway, I have to say it again. Thank you so much for this excellent guide. I think that this is, without a doubt, the most reliable and informative guide for anyone wanting to main Fox.

Thanks for the review! I'll be updating this shortly, and I'll be sure to add frame data in at some point!

Thanks again! :)
I thought this guide was excellent for anyone looking to main fox in ssb4. One thing I do have to say about it however is that you didn't put all of the combos that fox has. These aren't true combos, but if executed they can put on quite a lot of damage. For example If you fast fall with Fox's Nair you can up smash if the opponent doesn't recover properly. If that person is at lower percents, you can nair to firefox, his up special. This move is extremely powerful percent wise, and racks up about 30 damage once over. These are just things to consider, otherwise fantastic guide, love how you showed how to handle each individual character.

Thanks for the review! As mentioned at the end of the guide, I'm always going to be updating it with more combos and whatnot when ever I find them. About the fast fall Nair to his up special, it racks up damage, but can leave you vulnerable for a good punish on your way back down (if you choose to go up, I guess using it to the side could kind of help a little bit). Just something I was thinking about :) Thanks again
Not bad! Makes me consider practicing with Fox.

Thanks! I hope you try him out, quite a fun character in my opinion.
Excellent guide! Although I would make note of Fox's B-air and how it auto-cancels, making it essentially safe on shield. A great follow up on landing is U-tilt, Larry Lurr recently got a win at Final Battle by surprising the player with the U-tilt after the B-air, netting him the KO and the win! (It's pretty cool: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRuyEHbQgKQ#t=416).
This is a fairly good guide for Fox. You shouldn't sleep on the F-tilt, though. There was several opportunities for you to punish that guy with an F-tilt in that video you posted. It's good for shield pokes (if properly spaced) and can be used as a quick "get-out-of-my-face" option. It is also a safe attempt to punish rolls (if you don't want to hard read them).

Likewise the down-smash is good for horizontal knockback, especially on characters with sub-par recovery (Little Mac, Dr. Mario, etc.) The forward-smash can be used to punish rolls on reaction (the up-smash would be better if you read the roll).

Throws are situational and can be used for combo potential OR stage control. Up-throws could be good under platforms, and back-throws could be good at the edge.

Perfect Pivot tilts are a good part of Fox's game (Perfect Pivot SS Down-tilt into Up-air), though pivot down-smash could be just as good imo.

Also, are you aware that you can cancel ledge jump into any special move at the correct timing? You can cancel it into a standing illusion (Not sure why you'd want to, but...) or an invisible shine (if you're frame perfect). This can be good against people who spam projectiles off stage, and is a great deal safer than dropping from the ledge, burning your double jump, and then shining. If you perform it correctly, you will also be able to instantly roll or jump out of the shine (if you reflected something), as it is considered a standing shine. Not necessary to be good with Fox, but extra options can never be wrong.

Your guide was great at explaining the properties of moves, and it did have some good combos. Your section on mind games was excellent, and something I'd recommend to any Fox player. The section on throws was also necessary. Grabs are a pretty big part of Fox's game because his offense pressures people into trying to shield-grab. Though, I would strongly suggest that you upload a different gameplay video. While it was successful in showing the value of mind games, the sub-par play was somewhat detrimental to what you were trying to prove (Against average or below-average players, mind games are usually a waste of time. Random players are random, regardless of mind games.)

Please, keep up the good work!

Thanks for the review! I totally forgot to add the ledge canceling into the guide, I'll have to do that at some point soon! I'll be uploading a few more videos as well, and also basic matchups.
This is a pretty good introduction to Fox! I like it. Really the only problem is a lack of information. You said you will update it so I will be changing this review accordingly, but for now there is just a little too much missing for my liking. For example, you only provide a short overview of one of Fox's main strengths (his ground speed) and mention none of the others (his attack speed, his ability to easily lead into strong kill moves etc) or any of his weaknesses (easily juggled, light, low priority etc).
So, I recommend the following changes:
-A pros/cons list
-A list of kill moves
-Important info regarding certain moves (only the second hit of uair kills, ftilt has three variants etc.)
-More combos (I understand you are already working on this, but just for the sake of completeness)
-Call "Dash Lag Cancelling" "Dash Dancing", like everyone else does. It avoids confusion :P
-Advice on approaching
In terms of combos, mention dash attack (it combos into nair and dair, two of your best moves) and kill set-up combos like dtilt->uair.

Hope I helped, and best of luck making this the best fox guide on the site!
