Statuses in Smash

Statuses in Smash

Hi there! The 0ne here, with another general guide on things you didn't know you needed to know about.

This time, it's about statuses in Smash.

Disclaimer: Since I covered a bunch in my effects guide, you might be wondering why this exists. Well, in short, a) those weren't all of them, and b) those were specifically the ones you can SEE. These are all the statuses that are, well...implied. Everything we're going over here I'm doing as of Smash 4, but most of it is true for all the other smash games as well, or most of them at the very least.

Oh yeah, and PLEASE feel free to comment if anything is missing or incorrect.

Armor (a.k.a. Light Armor)
The first status we're covering today is simple Armor, also known as Light Armor. This will prevent a character from flinching while taking a hit from weak attacks and projectiles. A few characters have it.

  • Bowser (crouching, at low-ish percents)
  • Little Mac (Straight Lunge, charging)
  • Ganondorf (grounded Warlock Punch, halfway)

Heavy Armor
Heavy Armor is the same as the previous status, but as the name suggests, against stronger attacks. Nothing much more to say. I can't really think of anyone who has Heavy Armor.

  • Ganondorf (Warlock Punch, near the end)

Super Armor
Super Armor is grand daddy of armor, because it negates knockback and hitstun against any and all attacks.
...
Except grabs. A lot of big guys have Super Armor. And Little Mac.

  • Little Mac (all three smashes, fully charged Straight Lunge, and I think KO Punch)
  • Ganondorf (Warlock Punch: right at the beginning, and right before the hit)
  • Charizard (Rock Smash)
  • Donkey Kong (fully charged Giant Punch, grounded Spinning Kong)
  • Olimar (Whistle)
  • Yoshi (double jump)
  • Wario (fully charged Waft)
  • Pit (Upperdash Arm)
  • Dark Pit (Electroshock Arm)
  • PAC-MAN (Power Pellet)
  • Ike (fully charged Eruption, Aether; but only on the way up)
  • All grabs and command grabs, prior to Smash 4

Shield Armor
Bet you thought invincibility was next right? Don't worry, it's coming.
Shield Armor is a name I invented because on certain attacks, it says you're "invincible" while performing it...but you can still be grabbed, so...no. You're not. I call it Shield Armor because this is also true for all shields. You can't be knocked back or even damaged by any attack except a grab.

  • All shields
  • Kirby (Stone)
  • Greninja (Substitute)
  • Lucario (Double Team)
  • Marth (Counter)
  • Ike (Counter)
  • Lucina (Counter)
  • Little Mac (Counter)
  • Shulk (Vision)
  • Palutena (Counter)
  • Peach (Toad)
  • Pit/Dark Pit (through the Guardian Orbitars)
  • Bowser's shell during most of his moves

Tangible Invincibility
Here is true invincibility, the weakest of the three types. The tangible variety is when you just respawned after death, and you are physically able to take hits, causing freeze frames and the Clink circle, but will not take KB, dmg, or hitstun. This also occurs just before certain moves come out.

  • After respawning
  • During a throw animation
  • Mr. Game and Watch (up smash) Lasts like 22 frames too!
  • Mario/Doc (up smash)
  • Wii Fit Trainer (up smash)
  • Bowser (up smash, but just his shell)
  • Little Mac (counter attack animation, starting a Jolt Haymaker from the ground)
  • Kirby (fully charged Hammer Flip)
  • Dedede (fully charged Jet Hammer)
  • Jigglypuff (feet, downsmash; Rest)

Transparent Invincibility
The next type of invincibility is Transparent, where it's like you're not even there. Keep in mind, with both of these you flash white, but with Transparent Invincibility, the attack never even touches you.

  • Air dodges
  • Spot dodges
  • Rolls
  • Ledge Invincibility
  • Teching in place/Tech rolls
  • Getup rolls/normal getups in place
  • Getup attacks
  • Getups from ledge
  • Rolls from ledge
  • Villager (Pocket)
  • Sonic (beginning of up-b)
  • Sheik (hop just before she Vanishes)
  • Fox (beginning of Fox Illusion)
  • Falco (beginning of Falco Phantasm)
  • Mr. Game and Watch (while absorbing something with Oil Panic)
  • Zero Suit Samus (Flip Jump)
Invisibility
This is godlike. Not counting the cloaking device in Melee, triggered Invisibility literally means that you don't have a hurtbox ANYWHERE for a short time. And of course, you can't be seen.

  • Sheik (Vanish)
  • Zelda (Farore's Wind)
  • Palutena (Warp)
  • Meta Knight (Dimensional Cape)
  • Mewtwo (Teleport)
  • Greninja (Shadow Sneak, when he's gone during Substitute)
  • Lucario (when he's gone during Double Team)
So that's it, and I hope you learned something! G'bye now!

Cool stuff here, although you are wrong about Ike's Aether giving him super armour. There are points in the attack where he has super armour, but not all of it. On the way up he has super armour. But on start-up and falling down he doesn't (to prove this, try countering with Marth/Lucina as Ike tries to recover. It will hit him and knock him away, unless you have a different game).

Well I'm talking about smash Wii U. Ike does indeed have Super Armor on the way up; that's what I implied. The lists are just showing who has super armor in a move. I forgot it was only for part of it, but I wasn't wrong, was I? I'll edit it to clarify. Thanks for the review!
Informative, well made.

Thanks! To turn that 4 into 5, I'll add pictures as soon as I can!
