Perfect pivot tutorial for ssb4!
(This works in both versions of the game!)

Hey guys, its Shane again and I have another tutorial for ssb4, but this time it's going to be on perfect pivoting which is something any character can do, so that's good. Anyways, let me tell you what perfect pivoting is and what it's used for...

So what is a perfect pivot and why should I use it?
(If you want, you can skip to the bottom to watch the video btw)

Well, basically a perfect pivot is a way to quickly move in one direction, switch to the opposite direction, then stop in a neutral position. This will allow you to use any move you want, in fact, you can even do air moves when you perfect pivot too. So now that you know what it is and why you should use it, your probably wondering, how do i do it.

yup.

Good, because i'm about about to teach you how.
(if you're using a wii remote, you might as well leave, because it most likely wont work)

Anyways, you're going to need a controller that has some form of an analog stick, so here's a list of stuff that will work well for perfect pivoting

  • Gamecube controller.
  • Circle pad. (3DS)
  • Wii remote + nunchuck.
  • Classic Controller / Classic Controller pro.
So yeah, if you have any of those, your set to go. Don't try to use the dpad for this ever, unless you're Sonic, cause you have to have really fast thumb movement, even with all of the above things. So yeah, lets get onto the next part.

So how do I do a perfect pivot.

Simple, all you have to do is...
  1. Move towards whatever direction you want, but only do this in about 1-3 frames (move fast)
  2. Now you gotta switch to the opposite direction, do this in 1-3 frames again. (move fast again)
  3. LET GO! If you hold down the analog stick any longer, you will do a skid, and mess up the perfect pivot. You want to stop in a neutral position without skiding at all. If you did it right, it should look like you immediatly switched to your neutral animation.
and there you go! That's exactly how you do it. Pretty simple huh?

You make it sound so easy.

I guess it does sound easy, but that's becuase it actually is easy. The hard part about doing a perfect pivot is moving fast enough, trust me, i had a hard time at first, but all you really have to do to master it is just practice and get a feel for it.

So when should I use my new skills?

  • When your opponent is getting back onto the stage (reads)
  • While dodging an opponent
  • When you want to back away only just a bit
  • When you to space yourself away from your opponent while still being able to fight
  • If you're using Luigi's kick taunt, this comes in handy.
  • When reading your opponent
  • When you don't want to use your shield (shielding makes your risk being grabbed in some situations)
  • When you want to get a grab without rolling.
