Gyro Reverse Throw

Game Versions
Smash 3DS, Smash Wii U
Reverse Throwing the Gyro is a technique that R.O.B. can perform. All characters with items can reverse throw, but as I play R.O.B., I will describe the application and usage for him.

How To Reverse Throw

Reverse Throwing is pretty self explanatory. When R.O.B. is holding the gyro, he can throw it in all 4 directions, being up, down, left, and right. Reverse Throwing is the process of throwing your item in the direction your character is not facing in the air. Set up your reverse throw like you would set up a back air, and then throw your gyro.

Applications

Reverse Throwing has many different uses. The main one I have figured out is to reverse your direction mid air. Throwing backwards makes you enter the same throwing animation as throwing forwards, so after the throwing animation, you will be flipped around. By Reverse Throwing, you can set up an unexpected forward air, because the opponent will not be anticipating it when you are facing the other direction. You can also do this with back air, but it has more lag, so it's much less likely to work. You sacrifice your gyro to do this, but you can use this to get the upper hand on your opponent. Additionally, you can just throw your gyro backwards at your enemy, and they may not expect it if you are turned around. However, it seems like turning yourself around is the most practical application.

When Should You Use This?

Reverse Throwing seems to be most useful when your enemy is also in the air, because it makes it much harder to whiff your fair you sacrificed your gyro to use, and bair will work better if you choose to set it up. It is also a pretty good way to help yourself recover. Someone edge guarding you will not anticipate a bair and you can use it to avoid losing fuel from getting edge guarded.

I learned how to do this recently, and therefore I haven't honed the application of Reverse Throwing yet. I hope that it will be a helpful addition to the arsenal of other R.O.B. players too!
