A Beginner's Guide to Villager

Game Versions
Smash 3DS
Hello, there! Welcome to the world of Villager! My name is Tarmon! In my 100+ hours of Smash for 3DS, I've found that there is no character that I enjoy playing more than Villager. Whether you are just looking for an edge over your friends, or if you are interested in playing competitively, Villager is a fun character that will not disappoint. Throughout this guide I will discuss every one of Villager's attacks, as well as strategies I have found to be the most effective. Before I start, I just want to let you all know a few things: Sometimes during the moveset analysis I will have a single letter next to the type of move. D means Down, F means Forward, B means Back, and N means neutral. I know this is common knowledge for most, but this is a beginner's guide and I don't want anyone to be confused. Also, I have yet to collect all of Villager's Custom Special Moves, so if anyone can give me info on them I'll cite your username at the end of the guide. So without further ado, I will begin going over the moves:

BASIC MOVES:

Jab: Villager's jab is a bit lacking when compared to others in the game. It is a infinite series of small punches each doing 3%. The thing that really makes it painful to use if the fact that it doesn't hold the opponents in, and thus doesn't have a finishing move. Each hit will just push the opponent away slightly. I've only ever been able to get in 2-4 hits before the opponent is out of range.
Dash Attack: Villager's dash attack is one of my personal favorite moves aesthetically, he's just so cute! While running preform this attack and Villager will trip and throw a flower pot at the ground in front of him, which shatters on impact. The pot will do 10% and knock the opponent a reasonable distance away. It is great for spacing but beware! This attack has some nasty ending lag and if you don't knock your opponent out of the way with the pit, you will be in for a world of pain. There are also some great combos that involve dash attack, but I'll cover those later.

TILTS:

F-Tilt: F-tilt is one of the moves you will be using more than most others in his moveset. He swings an umbrella out in front of him doing 9%. This move is extremely fast and sets the opponent up for multiple combos. The umbrella can also cause opponents to trip setting them up to get hit with your dash attack right after. This combo is possible on small characters at approximately 30-40%, medium characters at about 40-50%, and large characters at around 50-60%
D-Tilt: This move is good for knocking opponents up in air. It does 13% and can set up some combos against larger characters.
Up-Tilt: Remember everything I just said about D-Tilt? Well Up-Tilt is every one of those things, but better. The only advantage of using D-Tilt is it's increased horizontal range and the ability to hit opponents laying on the ground. Besides that, Up-Tilt is better in vertical range, startup and ending lag, combo potential, and kill power. It's really just one of his best moves.

SMASH ATTACKS:

Up-Smash: Villager's Up-Smash involves him pulling out a nifty little box of fireworks and lighting them, hitting anyone within a short distance above and in front of them. It does between 11-15% and has minimal lag, but has an extremely small range.
F-Smash: Oh boy, this one. Villager whips out a bowling ball And drops it in front of him. The range is admittedly lackluster, but 15-21% per hit with impeccable knockback, I'd say it's a fair trade. This move can also be used near a ledge causing Villager to drop the ball over making for some hilarious gimps.
D-Smash: Remember all those memes back in 2013 about Villager being a serial killer? This is one of the reasons why. Villager pulls out a shovel and slams it into the ground in front of him, and then behind him, planting people into the ground upon impact. The hit in the front does 9% and the second hit does 8%. However, due to this move knocking the opponent straight into the ground it is impossible to kill with this move, and is exclusively for comboing. The problem with this is the fact that it is almost impossible to follow up when someone is hit with the front hit, and still hard with the back hit. I would just avoid this move entirely unless you're feeling cheeky.

Pummel: For those of you who are new to Smash, pummeling is where you press a while you have grabbed someone, dealing small damage. Villager's pummel does 3% per hit. Not much to mention here, other than Villager's pelvic-thrusting animation while doing it.
Up-Throw: This, along with all his other throws, depicts the young God tossing his opponent away with his buttterfly net. However, somehow they all do different damage and knockback, but I digress. Up-Throw does 10% and can be used to combo into aerials at low percents.
D-Throw: While this is by far Villager's weakest damaging throw, clocking in at 4%, it is his best throw for comboing. At low percents, I've been able to string together a D-Throw to short hop F-air to dash-attack
B-Throw: Back throw does 11%, and has the highest knockback of his throws.
F-Throw: What do you call a throw that lacks aerial combo potential, ground combo potential, and knockback, with only 9%? You call it F-Throw. Seriously, just use another throw.

Jab is actually pretty good, it can be a good get off me move on the ground and similar too nair. Side tilt seems to be a good landing option if you hit the opponent. Decent guide.
Great guide, although I would love some more tips and tricks. I have also found that d smash combos very well into up smash, even getting some kills every now and then
Pretty good, I've been wondering Villager's combos and how to preform them. This guide is detailed and well formatted! Five stars! :)
