It's almost impossible to top this amount unless the next game has a huge budget and an even bigger development team than before.

Or they just do the smart thing and not develop the game from the ground up.

In this era of gaming there is absolutely no need to rebuild a competitive fighting game from the ground-up every time, especially when it's something like Smash.

The next Smash need only do what Dissidia 012 did.

He is awesome at what he does.
The next Smash game can make some people upset about the gameplay, or about the characters, or anything like this.
I think they will go for ~62 characters and be a blast.Another great game.

I don't doubt even Donkey Kong franchise can take some love at anytime.

But that's so far away.
I think Sakurai will not work in a new Smash Bros in the next (at minimum) four years.

True. But 58 characters is way above average in fighting game terms.

I mean, anything could happen and Sakurai being Sakurai, we can't really count on the expected all the time. The man is a special kind of crazy.

If Sakurai somehow gets an even bigger development team for the next game, then I can see the roster becoming even bigger, but you do know that there will be a limit, right?

At this rate, what? Will we have a Smash with over 100 characters? You know that is not feasible unless you have a legion of people working on the game.

Of course, the other possibility is, as FalKoopa and ChikoLad stated, is using assets from Smash 3DS/Wii U and build upon it. However, if Sakurai decides to start from the ground up as he's always been doing so far, don't expect a much bigger roster than this game.

Well, I'd rather not talk about Smash 5 now. Too soon and I'm done with Smash speculation for a good while. It was a fun ride nonetheless.

I wonder what will Sakurai work on next once DLC is done in February. I'd like to see something completely new from him. Kid Icarus: Uprising was an amazing game and proves that Sakurai doesn't need to stick to the Smash series to make good games.

You know, GameXplain made a really good point.

Along with the idea myself and Falk mentioned (and I'm sure others too) about just giving the next Smash game the Dissidia 012 treatment (keeping the same engine so bringing back old content isn't much work, and then simply adding content they couldn't do in the original game - in Smash NX's case, it would also combine Wii U/3DS into one huge game on top of adding new stuff, I would imagine), they also mentioned the idea of a reboot.

I think I'd like to see both actually. For their big hype project, they port Smash Wii U/3DS onto NX and simply add more to it. Obviously adding missing fan favourite characters and stages like Wolf, but a big focus would be new modes like a fully-fleshed story-adventure mode and what not, and maybe new mechanics and features like a tag mechanic.

Then a sort of reboot that has mostly the "barebones" characters like Mario, Link, etc, but redoing their movesets as if they were new characters.

My only thing there though is that certain characters may not have much to work with in terms of redoing their movesets. Like Mario and Kirby would have plenty to work with, but what about say, Donkey Kong and Yoshi?

In that sense they could focus on maybe even more recent characters that could still easily be different. Sonic has a ton of potential for different movesets. Rosalina does too, a Luma-less Rosalina would be cool to see (as in a moveset designed with the idea of her being on her own all of the time), and was actually what I imagined before she was revealed.

Hell not even Bayonetta. For me, I more thought her sexualisation would be a challenge to tweak and not a flat out death knell.

The disappointment from Corrin is the fact that a literally "literally who" was the follow-up to Cloud and a reveal for the FINAL broadcast.

Again, I don't really care about the specifics of Corrin at this point since they still look fun to play in the end, but I do think the timing of Corrin's reveal is where half the salt is coming from, and I myself am disappointed at the timing of Corrin's reveal. Not salty, but considering the Ryu Direct was when Sakurai said "it will be just fan service from now on"....he kinda got that statement backwards. The Ryu Direct had way more fan-service than this one. Corrin is not fan service, he was outright revealed to be added for promotional reasons.

I still think the only way Inklings are getting into the next Smash is if they have a sequel come out within a year of the beginning of development. Like Sakurai said in that Fire Emblem interview, relevancy matters and I seriously doubt, even with popularity it has now, Splatoon will still be relevant by itself in 7 years, assuming the time frame between 4 and 5 is roughly the same as Brawl to 4.

So, really, don't get your hopes up.

Do people seriously think Splatoon won't get sequels and spin-offs and the whole shebang?

It was one of Nintendo's greatest successes in recent times and there is no way they will let it fade into obscurity, especially since it fills a demographic they otherwise don't have (shooter fans).

I mean seriously guys it beat Call of Duty for best shooter AND best multiplayer at the Game Awards.

Nintendo ain't dropping Splatoon.

Again, I don't really care about the specifics of Corrin at this point since they still look fun to play in the end, but I do think the timing of Corrin's reveal is where half the salt is coming from, and I myself am disappointed at the timing of Corrin's reveal. Not salty, but considering the Ryu Direct was when Sakurai said "it will be just fan service from now on"....he kinda got that statement backwards. The Ryu Direct had way more fan-service than this one. Corrin is not fan service, he was outright revealed to be added for promotional reasons

I agree that the april direct was a lot more of that kind of fanservice. And also that a big part of the reason Corrin got in was because of promotion, but keep in mind that popularity in japan might of also played a part.
